Tipsarevic Injury Forces His Withdrawal From Chennai, Australian Open In Doubt

The Australian Open for Janko Tipsarevic could be in danger as the 29-year-old continues to suffer with a heel tendon rupture which has forced him to withdraw from the Chennai Open in India.

The Serb, who won his last match on October 1 and then lost the following four as his season ended on a low note, was also unable to play in Serbia’s Davis Cup final against the Czech republic last month in Belgrade.

The No. 36 made his apologies to Chennai officials: “I have had a difficult three months after injuring my heel. I felt I would recover well in time for the Chennai Open but regret to say that I will not be able to take part in the tournament.

“I apologize to fans who have always supported me and waited to watch me play during matches there. Chennai was always my favorite tournament to start the new season. I really look forward to recovering quickly and getting back to playing tennis soon.”

The absence could also mean trouble for organizers of the Kooyong exhibition in Melbourne the week following, with Tipsarevic a part of that eight-man field. In Chennai, Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka now heads the favorite’s list in a field which also includes Mikhail Youzhny and Fabio Fognini.
