****** TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS ******

Paris

Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) N Djokovic def. (7) S Wawrinka 6-1 6-4

As matches go, this was pretty dull. As drama goes, Novak Djokovic is doing his best. Rafael Nadal doesn’t need much more to clinch the year-end #1, but Djokovic continues to apply all the pressure he can — not just winning but winning easily.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) R Nadal def. (9) R Gasquet 6-4 6-1

Unfortunately for Djokovic, Rafael Nadal continues to look strong — and is now only one win away from the year-end #1. It doesn’t matter where the win comes; it could be here or in London. Wherever it happens (assuming it happens), Nadal clinches the year-end top spot. Richard Gasquet will go to London ranked #9.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (5) R Federer def. (4) J del Potro 6-3 4-6 6-3

Funny that Roger Federer could do here what he couldn’t do in Basel. Maybe, last week, he felt the pressure of trying to qualify for London. That’s off, but there is still the matter of ending the year in the Top Five. That remains a very tall order — he’s still more than 1200 points behind #5 del Potro — but this obviously helps his chances! Del Potro will certainly remain #5 next week, but this costs him the chance to catch David Ferrer or Andy Murray. He could still rise at London, but even that is harder now.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) D Ferrer def. (6) T Berdych 4-6 7-5 6-3

Two hundred and thirty more points and David Ferrer ends the year ahead of Andy Murray in the rankings. That means a final here or two wins at London. As for Tomas Berdych, this just about ends his Top Five hopes for 2013. He’s more than a thousand points behind Juan Martin del Potro, meaning the only way it can happen is if he wins London.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. (8) Qureshi/Rojer 3-6 6-3 10-5

Luckily for Qureshi/Rojer, they have already qualified for London.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Peya/Soares def. S Gonzalez/Lipsky 3-6 6-3 10-5

Odd to see the same scores in the two top doubles matches…. This, not too surprisingly, formally eliminates Gonzalez/Lipsky from the Race.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Mirnyi/Tecau def. (3) Granollers/Lopez 6-3 6-4

If Mirnyi/Tecau had only played like this all year, they wouldn’t be having to worry about qualifying for London!

As it is, we show them still behind #8 Fyrstenberg/Matkowski — but by the tiniest of margins. If they can somehow make the final, they should be in. With Gonzalez/Lipsky out, they are the only contenders left.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Dodig/Melo def. (5) Bopanna/Roger-Vasselin 7-6(7-5) 3-6 10-4

No real news here — Dodig/Melo have qualified for London, and Bopanna/Roger-Vasselin were already out — but it emphasizes how good a year Dodig/Melo are having.
