Novak Djokovic’s fame knows no bounds in his homeland and now the newest name in European commercial aviation, Air Serbia, has named the first aircraft of its’ fleet after the Australian Open champion and world no.2.

Air Serbia was born out of the demise of that nation’s old state carrier, the loss-making JAT Airways and assumed all the assets and operations. But Djokovic is convinced the new company with a new image will be a success.

The aircraft ‘Novak Djokovic’, an Airbus A319, made its maiden flight on Saturday, flying from Belgrade to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

At the beginning of the month, the player Djokovic was asked permission by the company to begin their avowed policy of naming the first of the 14 aircraft that will form their fleet with names of 14 important Serbian ‘living legends’. Novak, currently in Paris preparing for the BNP Paribas Masters at the Palais Omnisports de Bercy, did not think twice about it and completely free ceded the use of his name and brand for this purpose, reported PR team of the world’s number two.

Djokovic said: “I’m happy if I can help my country to, together with Etihad, restore the reputation of the national airline and aviation. I’ll be proud to fly with Air Serbia and I am sure that the quality of services will be at the highest level.

“I truly hope that Air Serbia has more flights, satisfied customers and employees, new destinations and good business. Let us together be proud of another brand of Serbia.”

Air Serbia features a double-headed eagle logo in Serbia’s national, red, white and blue colors and was formed in partnership with Etihad Airways.
