If there’s one thing people know about me, it is my complete and utter joy for the game of tennis. When a match is on, you don’t bother me. You reach for the remote to change the channel and you might as well be Daniel stepping into the lion’s den. You just don’t mess with me when it comes to tennis – it’s a well-known fact. So imagine my severe annoyance at the fact that family weddings have been keeping me from the game I love for the last month…with more to go in the next few weeks!

For the first time in a long time, I have absolutely no idea what is going on in either the men’s or women’s tour. I know that Rafael Nadal won the U.S. Open, but past that I don’t know much of anything right now – and it’s driving me crazy! Don’t get me wrong, I love my family and I love spending time with them and celebrating all these wonderful occasions, but don’t they care that my true love will suffer?? Shouldn’t they make sure that there’s no tournament happening that I will need (ok, want) to watch? I mean, the sheer inconsiderateness of it all! (*please note the sarcasm, and that I would never expect my family to schedule events around the ATP and WTA tours*) I’m trading in hard courts for chiffon dresses, rackets for cheesy toasts, and tennis shoes for high heels. It’s really throwing off my system here people!

Even though I’ve been out of the loop, what I do know is that the year-end championships are quickly approaching. It should come as no surprise that Rafael Nadal is my pick to take it for the men, while Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka are in a close tie for contention on the women’s side. I won’t count Roger Federer out by any means, but this year has been a struggle for him and a year-end title would definitely be an upset. Did you ever think we’d get to the point where we’d call a win from Roger Federer an upset? I found myself surprised at even thinking it. But this is the year of Rafa…and nothing (or no one) will change that.
