Murray Expects To Return To The Tour With No Fitness Worries

With his 2013 season a washout due to back surgery on a disc, Andy Murray is pointing his tennis focus on a solid start in 2014, with his fitness worries hopefully behind him.

The Scot has expressed his optimism at being fit to lead the British team into Davis Cup World Group play in early February against the US in an away tie against the depleted former tennis powerhouse. Murray did his bit for the country the week after the US Open when he got the side back into the elite grouping with a win away in Croatia. He then decided to finally fix a back problem which kept him from the French Open last spring.

The Scot missed his dream of a Davis Cup home tie and will have to cross the Pacific after the Australian Open for a first-round clash February 3-5 in the US. “To get back in the World Group, get a big arena, and play against one of the top teams at home is good,” said the two-time grand Slam winner.

A US-vs-Britain clash has been a Davis drawing card for years, with the US holding the record of 32 championships in the competition. The Brits won their four titles in the 1930s, the same decade in which it owned Wimbledon.
