TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS

St. Petersburg

Singles – Quarterfinal: J Sousa def. (4) D Tursunov 6-4 6-3

This event really does make us wonder if anything makes sense. Joao Sousa makes his first career ATP semifinal on an indoor court? And over Dmitry Tursunov? In Russia? Particularly since Tursunov was defending semifinalist points; he will fall from #34 to probably #38.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (6) E Gulbis def. R Bautista Agut 6-1 6-2

This was nasty scheduling for Roberto Bautista Agut — a late match the night before (and a long one) followed by the second match on Friday. Little wonder he couldn’t do much. Ernests Gulbis is starting to move; we show him up to #33. And he faces another tired, unseeded opponent next. A final would possibly put him in the Top Thirty.

Singles – Quarterfinal: M Przysiezny def. (7) L Rosol 7-6(9-7) 1-6 6-3

Maybe Michal Przysiezny needs to have more horrible Davis Cup weekends. He’s bounced back with one of the best weeks of his career. This means that Lukas Rosol will not rise above his current #46.

Singles – Quarterfinal: G Garcia-Lopez def. (8) D Istomin 6-2 6-4

At least this upset is relatively sensible, since Guillermo Garcia-Lopez likes faster surfaces. He costs Denis Istomin the chance to rise above #47.

Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Marrero/Verdasco def. Groth/Guccione 3-6 7-6(7-4) 10-5

Metz

Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) J Tsonga def. T Kamke 4-6 6-3 6-4

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is really soaking up the court time here. This is probably getting to be more than he wanted — this match was more than two hours. At least he’ll earn points for any additional wins.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) G Simon (WC) def. (6) S Querrey 6-4 7-6(7-1)

It’s back to the European losses for Sam Querrey, but at least it was to a respectable opponent. Nonetheless, he remains stuck below #30. Gilles Simon is starting to add points; he’ll take John Isner’s place in the Top Fifteen if he reaches the final. And he faces an unseeded opponent next.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (8) F Mayer def. C Berlocq 5-7 6-4 7-5

Once agan we had a late match that was very, very late. After Florian Mayer broke in game eleven of the third set, Carlos Berlocq had multiple chances to break back as Mayer served for it. But Mayer managed to hold on to complete a two hour, eighteen minute victory. (This even though Berlocq won five more points in the match.) Mayer still hasn’t moved significantly, but if he can reach the final, he’ll be Top Forty.

Singles – Quarterfinal: N Mahut def. B Becker 6-2 6-4

This guarantees us a French finalist, since Mahut faces Simon next.

Doubles – Semifinal: Brunstrom/Klaasen def. (1) Bopanna/Roger-Vasselin 6-4 6-7(8-10) 10-6
