The WTA shifts focus to Asia for the next month, with Taiwan’s sixth-seeded Hsieh Su-Wei starting with a 6-1, 6-2 first-round win over Argentine Paula Ormaechea. The only other seed in action, No. 8 Monica Puig of Puerto Rico, began her week with a defeat of Ukrainian Nadiya Kichenok 7-5, 7-6(4)

 

American Vania King, the No. 126 who qualified into the Chinese field, beat South African Chanelle Scheepers 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 to reach the second round. The win was the first for King since early August in Cincinnati. There were also victories for Czech Karolina Pliskova, who put out Johanna Larsson of Sweden 6-4, 6-3, `Briton Johanna Konta, a winner against Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands 6-3, 6-2, and China’s Zhang Shuai, who began with a defeat of Russian Olga Puchkova 6-0, 7-6(1). Kazakh Galina Voskoboeva stopped Czech Petra Cetkovska 6-3, 6-1.

No. 3 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and German Julia Goerges became the first seeds to advance into the second round at the post-US Open start, with the Russian beating Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues in a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 comeback. Goerges, seeded sixth, beat Japan’s Misaki Doe 6-3, 7-5. |

 

South Korean Lee, Ye-Ra got a starting home win, defeating Daria Gavrilova of Russia 6-4, 6-1 while Russia’s Vera Dushevina beat Silvia Soler-Espinosa of Spain 6-4, 6-1. Spaniard Lara Arruabarrena balanced he Iberian ledger with her defeat of Russia’s fifth seed Elina Svitolina 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru stopped Han Sung-Hee of Korea 6-0, 7-6 while France’s Virginia Razzano beat Lourdes Dominguez Lino in a quick 5-1, 6-1.
