Rafael Nadal sported a newer and more expensive Richard Mille watch during the US Open, with his latest model weighing in at a feathery 19 grams and costing a healthy $690,000.
The new RM027 features a tourbillon and leaves his previous “old” model – 20 grams and just $525,000 – for dead as the Spaniard takes the prize for the most flamboyant watch contract in tennis.
The new timepiece, which Nadal wears faithfully during his matches, was designed in collaboration with the world No. 2 during a visit to the Swiss workshop where the pricey watches are assembled. The new model is constructed strictly from complex carbon composites, aluminum, lithium and titanium, materials strong enough to withstand the whiplash which Nadal generates with every shot which can send a ball over the net at up to 4,000 RPM.
Watch industry media report that the latest design can withstand 5,000Gs of force, with anything over 10G being potentially dangerous to humans. The first limited edition Nadal watch was a complete sellout, with the second expected to duplicate that feat among the community of rich timepiece enthusiasts.
