Madrid’s defeat as a candidate city for the 2020 Olympics came as a blow to Rafael Nadal as the Spanish tennis ace prepared for his US Open final with Novak Djokovic. The Spanish capital came up third time unlucky in Olympic bids, with the thinking attributed to the IOC in awarding the Summer Games to Tokyo was to put the event in a “safe” pair of hands.
Spain’s huge unemployment and economic problems were reportedly seen as a drawback to Madrid’s candidacy. That excuse doesn’t really cut it with Nadal, one of the best-known of all Spanish sportsmen.
“It’s hard, it’s tiring for all of us, because all the country, all the city of Madrid worked a lot to have that chance, and for so many times already. We feel that we deserve it. Maybe it’s time to take a rest for a while, and we will be back trying in a few years,” he said.
Nadal admitted he felt disappointment with the decision announced in Buenos Aires as he prepared for his New York grand slam date with Novak Djokovic. “I was disappointed because we felt that we are in a good position. All the country was very involved on the Olympics movement.
“So when I heard that happened, it was a surprise for me, especially being disqualified in the first round (against Tokyo and Istanbul, which borders troubled Syria. After a lot of years working so much, I don’t know if it’s 100 per cent fair that we go out at the first qualification when our opponents haven’t been in that position as many times.”
