Marion Bartoli, the reigning Wimbledon champion who announced her retirement from competitive tennis just 40 days after beating Sabine Lisicki to win her first major title, will return to the grass of London SW19 to play again this month.

Each September the All England Club stages an internal mixed doubles competition for members only to mark the closing of the grass courts for the winter. And Bartoli, who like all champions became an honorary member of the club the moment she won the title, has made a surprise request to play.

The All England Club is delighted the 28 year-old has made her request and after a random draw to decide her partner, Bartoli will be playing alongside Bill Babcock, the Grand Slam Committee director who is based in London.

But many see this desire to play as another sign that Bartoli is already having second thoughts about retirement. Last month she revealed she would represent France in next January’s Hopman Cup in Perth alongside Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

French newspaper L’Equipe has reported that negotiations for a replacement had been cut short after Bartoli indicated she would honor her original commitment agreed before her retirement announcement on August 15.

Then at a New York press conference, prior to the US Open, she admitted that she may change her mind and return to tennis in the future. “You can’t predict what is going to happen down the line,” Bartoli revealed. “Any return would come from desire deep inside, but for now I am just not at this point at all. My career has finished.”
