As the “baby” of the final days of the US Open, 24-year-old Victoria Azarenka is warning the world not to forget about her generation of WTA tennis talent. The odd one out in a women’s semi-final field in which the other three participants were aged over 30 says that she and her 20-something contemporaries are working to step up and take over in coming seasons.
The Belarus player doesn’t begrudge her elder sisters their days of tennis glory, which showed off well in New York over the fortnight. “The younger generation, Caroline (Wozniacki), and (Agnieszka) Radwanska, are doing really well. The young generation is really breaking through.
“You can see it in (Australian Open semi-finalist) Sloane Stephens, really taking it to her next level. So I think we are pretty even there.”
Azarenka admits that she sometimes feel the gap between her age and her accomplishments. “I do feel sometimes I’m a little bit older than my age, but actually I just turned 24. It feels like I have been on tour forever coming playing full time on tour since I’m 16. So it’s been a long journey, but I still consider myself as a young generation. Let’s stay that way.”
