David Ferrer’s coach Javier Piles had to return home early from the US Open last week because his father passed away. . . David Ferrer, who lost to Richard Gasquet, says his two favorites to reach the US Open final are Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. . .

And, you know, multiple Grand Slam titles that we have won is just ‑‑ I wouldn’t have won a single title without him and without his backing. I think that theory went out the door years and years ago, maybe over a decade ago.”. .. . . Petra Kvitova has undergone blood testing to determine why she keeps contracting viruses. She caught another one at the US Open, where she lost to Alison Riske. She is believed to have caught around seven different viruses since the start of 2012. . . Former No. 1 Martina Hingis hasn’t had a great start to her second comeback as she and her doubles partner Daniela Hantuchova failed to get out of the second round of any of the five tournaments that they contested, but they plan on playing Tokyo and Beijing. . . US player Jamie Hampton was very disappointed in her third round loss to Sloane Stephens at the US Open. “I’ve had tendencies, shown tendencies to play really bad in big moments,” said Hampton. “Kind of sucks.”
