U. S. Open

The grand slam took advantage of a late afternoon end to a day of rain to squeeze in all but the highlight fourth-round match between Victoria Azarenka and Ana Ivanovic on a wet Labor day. Just one women’s match was completed before rain moved into the area after being forecast for several days, with Italian 10th seed Roberta Vinci beating 21-year-old compatriot Camila Giorgi 6-4, 6-2.

Under a twice-revised program, the fourth-round match between second-seed Azarenka and Serb 13th seed Ivanovic was cancelled in favor of getting the men’s lineup completed.

The weather anguish again brings up painful memories of five years of delayed men’s finals due to the lack of a movable roof an any of the showcase stadiums in the ageing tennis complex built three decades ago on a swamp. Officials have announced a $500 million expansion plan to try and remedy the problems at the grand slam which has become the weakest link of the four majors. But most work will not be complete before nearly the turn of the next decade, including a roof over the massive Ashe stadium.

Later, Flavia Pennetta beat Simona Halep 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) and Daniela Hantuchova got past American Alison Riske 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 to complete their matches. Riske said she took the weather in stride. “‘I’ve had so many rain delays throughout my career. I play in England a lot, which pretty much happens every day. And I was thanking God that it actually rained because I really needed a break to just kind of regroup. I kind of treated it like my second time on Ashe because the first time was really overwhelming.”
