U. S. Open

Singles – Third Round: (2) R Nadal def. I Dodig 6-4 6-3 6-3

Another step toward #1, or at least the year-end #1, for Rafael Nadal. He leaves Ivan Dodig around #35.

Singles – Third Round: (4) D Ferrer def. M Kukushkin 6-4 6-3 4-6 6-4

Nothing comes easily for David Ferrer around here, it seems, but he does well enough to keep within 200 points of Andy Murray in the contest for #3.

Singles – Third Round: (7) R Federer def. A Mannarino 6-3 6-0 6-2

No signs of one of Roger Federer’s Slam collapses yet, obviously. This means that he will move from #7 to at least #6, with #5 still a real possibility; he and Tomas Berdych are still very close together. (Federer in fact leads, but he is also one round deeper into the draw.) And one more win for each will give us a Federer/Nadal quarterfinal.

Singles – Third Round: (8) R Gasquet def. (32) D Tursunov 6-3 2-6 6-4 4-2, retired

If it isn’t one thing for Dmitry Tursunov, it’s another. He’ll be just below the Top Thirty.

Singles – Third Round: (10) M Raonic def. (23) F Lopez 6-7(4-7) 6-4 6-3 6-4

The American press is apparently bugging Milos Raonic to play for the United States, but why should he switch now? This win puts him in the Top Ten in safe points, although it isn’t a sure thing yet.

Singles – Third Round: (22) P Kohlschreiber def. (13) J Isner 6-4 3-6 7-5 7-6(7-5)

You can probably guess how this went: Philipp Kohlschreiber played a wall and John Isner pounded on it in vain. Both players have now defended their points, and will end up where they came in or slightly higher.

Singles – Third Round: (18) J Tipsarevic def. J Sock 3-6 7-6(7-1) 6-1 6-2

Janko Tipsarevic still needs one more win to defend his points, but this will keep him Top 25.

Singles – Third Round: (19) T Robredo def. D Evans 7-6(8-6) 6-1 4-6 7-5

Tommy Robredo had to come from behind in the fourth set of this, but come from behind he did, effectively clinching his Top Twenty ranking.

Doubles – Second Round: (2) Peya/Soares def. Kas/Marach 6-3 6-2

Peya and Soares have not clinched the #3 and #4 spots, but it feels like the way to bet.

Doubles – Second Round: (3) Granollers/M Lopez def. Guccione/Tomic 1-2, retired

Doubles – Second Round: (4) Paes/Stepanek def. Brands/Oswald 4-6 6-3 6-4

Doubles – Second Round: (5) Qureshi/Rojer def. Bautista Agut/Gimeno-Traver 6-2 6-3

Mildly promising, but Qureshi/Rojer still need more to stay Top Fifteen.

Doubles – Second Round: (6) Bopanna/Roger-Vasselin def. Davydenko/Elgin 7-6(7-2) 7-6(7-0)

Doubles – Second Round: Baker/R Ram def. (7) Benneteau/Zimonjic 6-4 6-2

Nenad Zimonjic just might return to the Top Ten despite this loss, but a win would have helped a lot!

Doubles – Second Round: Cuevas/Zeballos def. Krajicek/Kudla 5-7 6-3 7-6(12-10)

Doubles – Second Round: Lu/Sharan def. Erlich/A Ram 6-4 5-7 7-6(7-2)

Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram have an amazing ability to play one step forward, one step back.

Doubles – Second Round: Stakhovsky/Youzhny def. Levinsky/Vesely 6-2 6-4

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Mladenovic/Nestor def. (2) Srebotnik/Zimonjic 6-1 7-6(7-3)

Definite support for mixed rankings, this — they would have made Mladenovic/Nestor the #2 seeds and demoted Srebotnik/Zimonjic to #5.

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (4) Peschke/Matkowski def. Husarova/Polasek 6-3 6-4

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (5) Medina Garrigues/Soares def. Date-Krumm/Marrero 6-3 7-5

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (6) Raymond/Rojer def. Moulton-Levy/Butorac 6-3 3-6 10-7

Hard to believe Eric Butorac couldn’t find a stronger partner. He pays the price for the lack.

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (7) Hlavackova/Mirnyi def. Y Chan/Lindstedt 6-3 6-4

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Hradecka/Cermak def. Barty/Peers 7-6(12-10) 7-6(7-5)

The real #1 team in mixed (as revealed by mixed rankings) marches on.
