Latest From The Women At The US Open

epa03844385 Serena Williams of the US hits a return to Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan on the fifth day of the 2013 US Open Tennis Championship at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York, USA, 30 August 2013. The US Open runs through 09 September, a 15-day schedule for the first time. EPA/ANDREW GOMBERT  |

U. S. Open

Singles – Third Round: (1) Serena Williams def. Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3 6-1

Very little to say about this except that Serena continues to pad her lead in the contest for #1.

Singles – Third Round: (3) Agnieszka Radwanska def. (32) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4 7-6(7-1)

Once again Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova falls short of the Top Thirty — it appears she’ll be #31.

Singles – Third Round: (5) Li Na def. (30) Laura Robson 6-2 7-5

Not only does Li Na get revenge for last year, she drops Laura Robson a spot or two below her current #32.

Singles – Third Round: (8) Angelique Kerber def. (25) Kaia Kanepi 6-0 6-4

A nice win for Angelique Kerber, given her recent struggles. Kaia Kanepi, despite adding substantial points, remains just below the Top 25.

Singles – Third Round: (9) Jelena Jankovic def. Kurumi Nara 6-4 7-6(7-5)

This moves Jelena Jankovic ahead of Petra Kvitova in the contest for #10 — until Kvitova plays her own third round match.

Singles – Third Round: (15) Sloane Stephens def. (23) Jamie Hampton 6-1 6-3

And so Sloane Stephens will have another shot at Serena Williams. And even if Serena gets revenge, Stephens is likely to reach #12.

Singles – Third Round: (24) Ekaterina Makarova def. (16) Sabine Lisicki 6-4 7-5

This will let Ekaterina Makarova stay Top 25. Sabine Lisicki will probably hit the Top Fifteen, but this costs her the chance to clinch.

Singles – Third Round: (20) Carla Suarez Navarro def. Zheng Jie 6-2 6-4

Zheng Jie fails to add any points; she will stay right around #55.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Errani/Vinci def. Hantuchova/Hingis 6-3 7-5

Too bad for Hantuchova/Hingis that they didn’t face Errani/Vinci the day before, when Sara Errani was feeling so down. But Hantuchova/Hingis may have some thinking to do. They haven’t performed particularly well. We have to wonder about the combination.

Doubles – First Round: (2) Makarova/Vesnina def. Aoyama/Scheepers 6-4 6-1

Makarova/Vesnina have a genuine shot at the #1 and #2 doubles spots this week. This is a nice start. We show the doubles Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) ERRANI ………….7580*

1..(1) VINCI …………. 7580*

3..(3) PETROVA ……….. 7325*

4..(4) VESNINA ……….. 7140*

5..(5) MAKAROVA ………..7100*

6..(6) SREBOTNIK ……… 6725*

7..(7) HSIEH …………. 5475*

8..(9) PENG ……………5136*

9.(10) PESCHKE ……….. 4955*

10.(12) GROENEFELD ………4955*

Doubles – First Round: (4) Hsieh/Peng def. Daniilidou/Panova 6-3 6-4

Doubles – First Round: (5) Hlavackova/Hradecka def. Date-Krumm/Parra Santonja 6-0 6-3

It’s a start, but last year’s finalists need a lot more than this to stay Top Ten.

Doubles – First Round: Craybas/Vandeweghe def. Cadantu/Halep 2-6 7-6(7-4) 6-4

If reports are correct, this will be Jill Craybas’s last Slam. (Not that she has much choice, given her current ranking.) Nice to see that she gets to go out with a better result than James Blake or Nicolas Massu.

Doubles – First Round: Hercog/Raymond def. Martic/Petkovic 6-2 3-6 6-4

No word of retirement yet for American’s other over-35 veteran, Lisa Raymond, but that’s a rather scary score.

Doubles – First Round: Fichman/Wozniak def. Kiick/Vickery 7-5 4-6 6-1

Doubles – First Round: King/Rybarikova def. Ka. Pliskova/Vekic 6-1 6-0

Doubles – First Round: Klemenschits/Klepac def. Dushevina/Watson 6-1 7-5

Doubles – First Round: Kuznetsova/Stosur def. Meusburger/Ormaechea 6-3 6-0

Doubles – First Round: Oudin/Riske def. Davis/Min 6-2 6-4

Doubles – Second Round: (6) Groenefeld/Peschke def. Babos/Schiavone 6-4 6-4

Doubles – Second Round: (8) Barty/Dellacqua def. Cetkovska/Flipkens 6-3 6-4

Doubles – Second Round: (13) Black/Erakovic def. Lepchenko/S Zheng 6-1 7-6(7-5)

Doubles – Second Round: (14) Mladenovic/Voskoboeva def. Bertens/Larsson 7-5 7-6(11-9)

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Barty/Peers def. (1) Groenefeld/Peya 4-6 6-3 11-9

Groenefeld/Peya were not #1 under Mixed rankings — they weren’t even seeded — so this is a clear triumph for Mixed rankings.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (2) Srebotink/Zimonjic def. Black/Qureshi 6-3 6-1

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Spears/S Gonzalez def. (3) Goerges/Bopanna 6-7(1-7) 6-2 10-6

Goerges/Bopanna would have been unseeded under mixed rankings, and only one place ahead of Spears/Gonzalez, so no big surprise here.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (5) Medina Garrigues/Soares def. Oudin/Krajicek 7-5 6-2

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (7) Hlavackova/Mirnyi def. Christian/Novikov 6-1 6-1

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (8) Huber/Melo def. Mirza/Tecau 4-6 7-6(12-10) 10-4

This at least goes against Mixed rankings, which would have made Mirza/Tecau the #4 seeds.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Hradecka/Cermak def. Llagostera Vives/Fleming 6-2 7-5

Mixed rankings make Hradecka/Cermak the top team in the world. No reason to argue with that so far….

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Kops-Jones/Huey def. Duval/Young 2-6 6-4 10-6

Mixed Doubles – First Round: H Chan/Emmrich def. Stephens/Sock 6-4 6-4

Doubles experience beats singles skill….

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Y Chan/Lindstedt def. Hingis/Bhupathi 7-6(7-5) 7-6(7-5)

All we can say is, Martina Hingis has a lot to think about in this second comeback of hers. She and Bhupathi seemed once to be the best Mixed team in the world!

Amazingly, they had to turn away spectators from the court for this match. In Mixed! But Hingis’s serve was not working at all well; she would later say that her calf hurt. Still, it was a very depressing day for her.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Cornet/Roger-Vasselin def. Santamaria/Jenkins 6-4 6-1

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Husarova/Polasek def. Schnack/Roberson 6-4 7-6(7-3)

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Mladenovic/Nestor def. Dellacqua/Lipsky 6-3 6-3
