TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS

U. S. Open

Singles – Second Round: (4) D Ferrer def. R Bautista Agut 6-3 6-7(5-7) 6-1 6-2

Surprising that this was so close. But it moves David Ferrer another step toward Andy Murray and the #3 ranking.

Singles – Second Round: (7) R Federer def. C Berlocq 6-3 6-2 6-1

One more win and Roger Federer will formally clinch the #7 ranking. (Sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? Clinch the #7 spot?) More to the point, he looks like he wants that meeting with Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinal….

Singles – Second Round: (8) R Gasquet def. S Robert 6-3 7-5 7-5

Richard Gasquet needs one more win to defend his points, and even that won’t guarantee his Top Ten ranking, but he’s getting closer.

Singles – Second Round: (10) M Raonic def. P Andujar 6-1 6-2 6-4

It’s just possible that one more win would make Milos Raonic Top Ten, although he’s likely to need more. He leaves Pablo Andujar just below the Top Fifty.

Singles – Second Round: (18) J Tipsarevic def. D Sela 6-4 6-4 6-1

Janko Tipsarevic was never as good as his Top Ten ranking of earlier this year, but he is certainly better than the ranking of #30 or so he would have had had he lost this….

Singles – Second Round: (19) T Robredo def. F Dancevic 6-4 6-4 6-1

It now looks quite likely that Tommy Robredo will be Top Twenty after the Open.

Singles – Second Round: (22) P Kohlschreiber def. E Roger-Vasselin 6-3 6-2 5-7 6-2

One more win and Philip Kohlschreiber will have defended his points. He’s already effectively assured his Top Thirty spot.

Singles – Second Round: (23) F Lopez def. B Klahn 6-4 7-6(7-4) 4-6 7-5

So far, all Feliciano Lopez has done is defend his points, but because of what others have (not) done, he’s likely to gain at least one ranking spot.

Singles – Second Round: A Mannarino def. (26) S Querrey 7-6(7-4) 7-6(7-5) 6-7(5-7) 6-4

Sam Querrey really has some things to work on after this debacle. Including his ranking. This could have been his chance to hit the Top Thirty, but it won’t happen now; John Isner will remain the only American Top Thirty player.

Singles – Second Round: (32) D Tursunov def. G Rufin 7-6(7-4) 1-1 retired

This doesn’t quite put Dmitry Tursunov in the Top Thirty, but one more win probably would.

Singles – Second Round: I Dodig def. N Davydenko 6-1 6-4 6-4

This is not an upset based on current form, and frankly it’s no surprise either. Nikolay Davydenko will likely be just a little below #40; Ivan Dodig is around #35.

Singles – Second Round: D Evans def. B Tomic 1-6 6-3 7-6(7-4) 6-3

Talk about a contest of bad boys trying to atone! Bernard Tomic may not have atoned quite enough; he would have clinched a Top Fifty spot had he won this.

There is a report that Dan Evans wanted to practice with Tomic, but Tomic’s father said Evans wasn’t good enough. One suspects Evans Senior will not get the joke.

Singles – Second Round: M Kukushkin def. A Haider-Maurer 6-4 6-4 7-5

Mikhail Kukushkin is back to somewhere in the rough vicinity of #150.

Singles – Second Round: J Sock def. M Gonzalez 7-6(7-3) 1-6 7-5 6-2

Strange indeed — Maximo Gonzalez beat Jerzy Janowicz then lost this.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Delbonis/L Mayer 7-6(7-1) 6-2

Five more matches to a calendar Grand Slam.

Doubles – First Round: (2) Peya/Soares def. Blake/Sock 4-6 6-2 6-2

And with that, James Blake’s career really is over. But it was a solid loss to the world’s #2 team. There are worse ways to lose! It’s possible that Peya and Soares could lose the #3 and #4 rankings this week, but not very likely. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) Bryan………….12370

1..(1) Bryan………….12370

3..(3) Peya……………5700

3..(4) Soares………….5700

5..(7) Bopanna…………5140

6..(5) Lopez…………..4650

6..(6) Granollers………4650

8.(10) Bhupathi………..4580

9.(11) Zimonjic………..4120

10..(8) Stepanek………..3860

Doubles – First Round: (3) Granollers/M Lopez def. Kamke/F Mayer 5-7 7-5 6-1

Better than a lot of recent results for Granollers/Lopez — but they’re defending semifinalist points and need more than this to stay #5/#6.

Doubles – First Round: (4) Paes/Stepabek def. Nieminen/Tursunov 6-4 7-6(7-4)

Doubles – First Round: (7) Benneteau/Zimonjic def. Bednarek/Lacko 6-1 7-6(7-4)

Doubles – First Round: Stakhovsky/Youzhny def. (8) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski 6-4 6-4

It really seemed as if Fyrstenberg/Matkowski were back, but evidently not quite all the way. They’ll remain around #20.

Doubles – First Round: J Murray/Peers def. (9) Marrero/Verdasco 7-6(7-4) 6-4

Last year, Marrero/Verdasco were genuine contenders for the year-end Championships. This probably eliminates the possibility for 2013.

Doubles – First Round: Erlich/A Ram def. (11) S Gonzalez/Lipsky 6-2 6-3

Time for another round of “Are Erlich/Ram finally back?” To which we can only say, “Who knows?”

Doubles – First Round: (14) Llodra/Mahut def. Jenkins/Styslinger 6-3 6-2

Doubles – First Round: (16) Huey/Inglot def. Knowle/Melzer 6-2 6-7(4-7) 7-6(7-5)

Talk about a lethargic Open for Jurgen Melzer!

Doubles – First Round: Baker/R Ram def. Oosterbaan/Schneider 6-0 6-4

Doubles – First Round: Begemann/Emmrich def. Kuznetsov/Reynolds 6-4 6-2

Doubles – First Round: Bracciali/Dlouhy def. Lorenzi/Seppi 7-5 7-5

Doubles – First Round: Harrison/Lindstedt def. Johnson/Russell 7-6(8-6) 7-6(10-8)

Robert Lindstedt wasn’t too happy about having to find a partner on short notice, and it looks as if he has a point, given how close this was and the fact that he needs one more win to defend his points.

Doubles – First Round: Krajicek/Kudla def. Klizan/Mertinak 6-3 6-2

Doubles – First Round: Levinsky/Vesely def. Istomin/Skupski 6-3 6-3

Doubles – First Round: Lu/Sharan def. Haase/Sijsling 6-1 7-5

Doubles – First Round: Nestor/Pospisil def. Bhupathi/Petzschner 6-3 7-6(7-4)

Now this is an interesting lineup. We knew Daniel Nestor had dumped Robert Lindstedt. But playing with Vacek Pospisil? Pospisil suddenly has quite the singles career to worry about; he probably won’t want to be too chained to doubles.

TODAY’S FEATURE

This Week’s Movers — Men

Each week, Daily Tennis will look at the biggest movers of the week, looking at how they did what they did.

Biggest Upward Mover — Most Places Moved (Top 100)

Leader: Jurgen Melzer — Moved 5 places, from #32 to #27.

Melzer got back in form (temporarily) by winning Winston-Salem.

Runner-Up: TIE

Gael Monfils — Moved 4 places, from #43 to #39

Guido Pella — Moved 4 places, from #94 to #90

Guillaume Rufin — moved 4 places, from #95 to #91

Monfils was in the Winston-Salem final, but was hurting. The other two moves are trivial.

Biggest Percentage Mover — Cut Ranking By Highest Percent (Top 100)

Leader: Melzer, cut ranking 16%

Runner-Up: Monfils, 9%

Biggest Loser — Most Places Lost (Top 100)

Loser: Evgeny Donskoy — Dropped 19 places, from #83 to #102.

Donskoy lost Challeger points; at this time in his career, he had an ATP record of 1-8.

Biggest Percentage Loser — Worst Percentage Increase in Ranking (Top 100)

Loser: Donskoy, ranking increased 23%.

Ranking Notes

We’re always complaining about quiet weeks, but this has to be close to a record. Only one player (Melzer) rose as much as 10%. Monfils was the only other player to rise as much as 7% — and the next three players down the list (Janowicz, Almagro, and Simon), who rose about 6% each, all rose because John Isner couldn’t defend his North Carolina title. Isner, who fell 21% (to #17) and Donskoy were the only players to fall more than 10%.

Our Personal Picks for “Best Mover of the Week”

These are subjective picks!

No real choices available except Melzer.
