Canadian Open

Singles – Final: (4) R Nadal def. (11) M Raonic 6-2 6-2

As a match, this was pretty dull — Milos Raonic had only four aces, and won only 60% of first serve points, and he isn’t going to win matches that way! As an event, however, it was interesting indeed, because Rafael Nadal, who is firmly #3, is now within a thousand points of Andy Murray.

It’s not likely that Nadal can catch Murray in Cincinnati; he needs to win the title and have Murray go out in the first few rounds. And winning the Canadian/Cincinnati back-to-back combination is almost impossible. But it could happen. And even if it doesn’t, Nadal is making real noise in the Race. It’s worth looking at those numbers; Nadal, with eight titles this year plus two finals in 11 events, is above 8000 points:

Nadal: 8010

Djokovic: 6420

Murray: 5250

Ferrer: 4290

del Potro: 2960

Berdych: 2755

Federer: 2695

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray had better get things in gear…. But Nadal isn’t getting overconfident: “We have to realize how many points I have to win to be number one. I think I will not be number one if I have less than ten thousand points at the end of the season. [Given where the others stand, he is likely right.] Today I have eight thousand. I need to win minimum two thousand more. That’s very difficult in this part of the season, but I’m going to try.”

Doubles – Final: (3) Peya/Soares def. Fleming/A Murray 6-4 7-6(7-4)

All right. That’s it. We’re done. We aren’t talking about #3 seeds Peya/Soares any more.

That’s not because we’re mad at them or something. It’s because the #2 team in the world can’t be seeded #3. They are up to #3 and #4 (behind the Bryans, of course), and they have their fourth and biggest title of the year (following Sao Paulo, Barcelona, and Eastbourne). They have won on three surfaces; they need only an indoor title to complete a surface sweep. There really isn’t any question but that they are the best non-Bryans of 2013 — they are the only team whose point total is as much as a third of the Twins’ in the Race. And Soares is doing even better; he also won Auckland (with Fleming, ironically). The doubles world splits into the Bryans and the Rest, but we know with certainty who is the Best of the Rest.

Cincinnati

Singles – First Round: J Benneteau def. M Baghdatis 6-3 6-2

Julien Benneteau keeps alive his hopes for a U. S. Open seed — but it appears Marcos Baghdatis will be stuck several spots below #50; no seed for him!

Singles – First Round: (WC) R Harrison def. A Dolgopolov 7-6(7-3) 6-4

No seed for Alexandr Dolgopolov, either. Perhaps just as well; he’s really in a funk.
