Stanford

Singles – Second Round: (5) Sorana Cirstea def. (Q) Coco Vandeweghe 6-3 6-3

The bad news for Coco Vandeweghe is, she was last year’s finalist here. The good news is, those points are already off — but, because they’re off, she is down to #245, and the fact that she didn’t manage to replace them means that she will stay stuck in the #200 range (probably just a little above that mark). It’s going to be a tough summer…. For Sorana Cirstea, this very likely means that she will return to the Top Thirty.

Singles – Second Round: (6) Varvara Lepchenko def. Tamira Paszek 6-4 6-4

Tamira Paszek will remain stuck below the Top Hundred as a result of this loss. But Varvara Lepchenko is up to around #38.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Kops-Jones/Spears def. McHale/Paszek 4-6 6-3 10-8

Kops-Jones/Spears make most of their living on hardcourts. These are the matches they really can’t afford to lose.

Doubles – First Round: (2) Goerges/Jurak def. Cibulkova/Niculescu 4-6 6-4 10-8

Doubles – First Round: Govortsova/Kudryavtseva def. Miyamura/Puchkova 6-3 6-1

Baku

Singles – First Round: (3) Chanelle Scheepers def. Andrea Hlavackova 3-6 6-3 6-4

After winning four straight matches, Andrea Hlavackova has now lost two straight.

Singles – First Round: Galina Voskoboeva def. (6) Polona Hercog 7-6(9-7) 4-6 6-3

Polona Hercog came here ranked #102, meaning that she would have been unseeded had this week’s rankings been used. And this loss probably means she’ll stay below #100.

Singles – First Round: (7) Elina Svitolina def. Aleksandra Krunic 6-3 4-6 6-2

One more win would move Elina Svitolina above #70.

Singles – First Round: (Q) Kateryna Kozlova def. Eleni Daniilidou 6-2 3-6 6-4

Eleni Daniilidou will remain below #100.

Singles – Second Round: (WC) Ons Jabeur def. (1) Bojana Jovanovski 6-2 7-5

This event is producing a lot of upsets — hardly surprising, when you consider the weakness of the field. But Bojana Jovanovski was the one and only Top Fifty player here, so this should have been an easy chance to make points. Instead, she falls from #37 to no better than #49.

Singles – Second Round: (2) Donna Vekic def. (Q) Tetyana Arefyeva 6-1 6-2

This is looking like a big chance for Donna Vekic. Sure, she has lost both her previous finals — but there isn’t much experience left in the draw….

Singles – Second Round: (4) Alexandra Cadantu def. Mandy Minella 5-7 6-1 6-3

A nice result for Alexandra Cadantu, who in the past has given the impression of not liking this surface all that well.

Doubles – First Round: (2) Buryachok/Kalashnikova def. Cadantu/Ferrer Suarez 6-1 6-2

Doubles – First Round: (3) Klemenschits/Klepac def. Ivakhnenko/Kozlova 6-4 6-3

Five straight for Klemenschits/Klepac.

Doubles – First Round: Daniilidou/Krunic def. Brianti/Peer 4-6 6-4 10-8

Doubles – First Round: Dolonc/Tatishvili def. (WC) Farhad/Sharipova 6-1 6-1

On the down side, Johansson fell 26%, Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor lost 25% (to #84), last year’s Bastad champion Polona Hercog fell 24% (to #102), and last year’s San Diego champion Dominika Cibulkova lost 19% (to #25).
