Hamburg

Singles – Final: (12) F Fognini def. (Q) F Delbonis 4-6 7-6(10-8) 6-2

Federico Delbonis is surely going to remember the second set of this match for a long time. He led 4-1 in the set, and blew it. He had three match points in the tiebreak — including one on his own serve — and blew them all. And then went down 3-0 in the third set. Delbonis did manage to break at 5-1 as Fognini served for the match, but it was mostly downhill in the third.

Fabio Fognini stretched his winning streak to ten straight — the longest of his career. He has won two titles in a row, and this one a 500 pointer. We show him rising from #25 to #19. It’s going to be harder for him to rise from now on; he’s starting to run out of slots. But he’s already had a fortnight that a lot of players will never match.

Doubles – Final: Fyrstenberg/Matkowski def. (2) Peya/Soares 3-6 6-1 10-8

It has been a long, long wait. This is the first title for Fyrstenberg/Matkowski since Madrid 2012. They really needed this….

For Peya/Soares, it’s a bit of a setback. They weren’t going to reach #3/#4 this week, but it looked as if it could happen soon. They still have a good shot at it this summer, but this likely means they will have to actually earn it, on hardcourts, rather than back into it.

Bogota

Singles – Final: I Karlovic def. A Falla 6-3 7-6(7-4)

You can probably guess how this went. Sixteen aces for Ivo Karlovic; he never faced a break point. (As a matter of fact, he was never broken in 61 service games here!) Alejandro Falla saved four of five break points he faced, but the one he lost cost him the first set, and one stray point cost him the tiebreak. And so he is still without a title.

Ivo Karlovic, though, has his first title in more than five years, since Nottingham 2008. It’s career title #5.

More: It’s his first title ever on outdoor hardcourt. Which means that he has achieved a surface sweep. He won Stockholm 2007 on indoor hard, Nottingham 2007 and 2008 on grass, Houston 2007 on clay, and now this.

Karlovic now has seven wins in the last two weeks. He had only three from the Australian Open to Houston, when he went down with viral meningitis. He came here with his ranking down to #155 (which is in fact up from the #167 he had fallen to entering Newport). He increases his points by more than half, and should rise to probably a little above #90.

Alejandro Falla may not get another chance at a title. But at least he did well enough to put himself back in the Top Hundred. And he did it in his home country. This probably qualifies as the most enjoyable result of his career.

Clarification

In yesterday’s feature, we referred to Kitzbuhel in a way that might have implied it was not being played this year. What we meant is that it isn’t being played in the same week this year.
