The Bank of the West Classic has suffered another body blow to attendance with Wimbledon winner Marion Bartoli joining Maria Sharapova on the sidelines of the kick-start to the pre-US Open run-up event due to injuries. Bartoli, world No. 7, added her name to the absentee list due to a slow-healing hamstring injury while Sharapova withdrew earlier to rest a hip problem.

Bartoli, who crushed Sabine Lisicki for the Wimbledon title this month, said her hamstring had been bothering her for some time. “During Wimbledon I developed a strain which has not healed over the past two weeks.

“I’ve been receiving therapy and was optimistic that I would be able to participate in one of my favorite tournaments on the circuit. Unfortunately, the injury has not completely healed and I will be unable to play.”

With the two biggest names missing and holder Serena Williams not defending her title, the northern California event will have to depend on the likes of 2012 Wimbledon finalist Agnieszka Radwanska, 2011 US Open champion Samantha Stosur and 2010 French Open winner Francesca Schiavone to bring in what may well be sparser crowds. Bartoli won the title in 2009 over Venus Williams and lost the 2011 final to Serena.
