* Paire first seed into third round after win over Montanes

* Dolgopolov may hit Top 25 despite loss to Florian Mayer; Mayer probably needs one more win to stay Top Fifty

* Karlovic continues strong comeback with win over Bogota qualifier

Bogota

Australian James Duckworth and Colombian home hero Alejandro Fall both produced upsets of seeds, with Duckworth knocking out Slovene No.

7 Aljaz Bedene 6-3, 6-4 while Falla eliminated eighth-seeded Belgian veteran Xavier Malisse 6-1, 3-6, 6-1. But Belgium’s Ruben Bemelmans got a win for the European nation, beating Colombian wild card Nicolas Barrientos 7-5, 6-3.

Canadian Vasek Pospisil started with victory over No. 102 Michal Przysiezny 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 while Croatian Ivo Karlovic continued his comeback from spring illness which put him in a Florida hospital, defeating Argentine Juan Ignacio Londero 7-6(5), 6-4. Qualifier Chris Guccione advanced into the second round when Evgeny Korolev retired ill trailing 6-1, 1-0.

 

Hamburg

Players moved ahead with second-round wins on the Rothenbaum clay as the ATP 500 event awaits the start of Roger Federer at mid-week against German Daniel Brands. Spanish third seed Nicolas Almagro accounted for Germany’s Tobias Kamke 6-3, 6-3, his 21st win in 31 clay matches in 2013.

Florian Mayer struck a blow for home hopes with his upset of seventh seed Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 6-4. Eighth seed Jeremy Chardy of France lost to Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 7-6(1) while No. 9 Benoit Paire ousted Spain’s Albert Montanes 6-1, 6-4. French showman Gael Monfils provided a crowd-pleasing victory as he beat Andrey Golubev, champion three years ago, 6-3, 6-3

Slovenian Blaz Kavcic set up a meeting with second seed Tommy Haas after winning his opening match over Victor Hanescu 4-6, 6-4, 6-1/ Also in the first round, there were wins for German wild card Jan-Lennard Struff, Dutchman Robin Haase, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain and compatriots Marcel Granollers and Albert Ramos.

Federer and Haas, the week’s drawcards, made a publicity appearance at the German city’s iconic lake, with four-time champion Federer and Haas, playing the event for the 11th time, brandishing their racquets for the cameras.
