Roger Federer, clearly affected by his second round loss at Wimbledon, has confirmed he will experiment with a larger prototype racket, complete with 8 square inches more in the head, at this week’s Bet-at-Home Open in Hamburg.

The 31 year-old had been spotted practicing with the black-framed racket, which looks considerably bigger than the Wilson BLX Pro Staff, complete with a 90 square-inch head, that he has used for 11 years.

Federer’s new Wilson prototype racket has a 98 square-inch size and gives him increased power. Confirming the switch, he said: “I think 90% of the players on the ATP World Tour have head sizes between 95 and 100 square inches.  We have now tested this, and so far it’s going great. I can easily adjust with the new power.”

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal use 100-inch heads and Andy Murray a 98-inch head. Federer will play with the new racket in his opening match at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum today against Daniel Brands.

Federer has previously been a man of habit, rather like his predecessor as world no.1 Pete Sampras who played his entire competitive career with an 85 square- inch headed Wilson Pro Staff 6.0. But after retiring and trying other sized rackets, Sampras maintained he should have experimented sooner.
