The unexpected return of Roger Federer to this week’s Hamburg event is expected to drive ticket sales and attendance through the roof at the once-proud former Masters 1,000 series, played for the last five seasons as a 500 event on the ATP.

Due likely to his early loss at Wimbledon where he was defending the title,, the 31-year-old Swiss has opted for a big change in his summer program and is playing on clay in Hamburg this week and returning to Gstaad next week in Switzerland.

The arrival of 17-time grand slam winner Federer is all good for Hamburg tournament director Michael Stich, who has welcomed the 2008 finalist back With all 16 seeds getting a bye at the Rothenbaum club, Federer, Wimbledon semi-finalist Jerzy Janowicz, and Germany’s Tommy Haas won’t see action until mid-week.

“I’m very pleased that we can present probably the best player of all time, Roger Federer, to tennis fans this year,” Stich told local media.

“I’ve always said that it’s our goal to once again get a top player of this magnitude to Hamburg.”

Federer admitted that his second-round Wimbledon loss to Sergiy Stakhovsky came as a rude awakening. “It was strange to go out so early, I didn’t know what to do,” the four-time Hamburg winner told local media, “But I had a clear plan 48 hours later to play at Hamburg and Gstaad.”
