The tears have dried after Sabine Lisicki’s Wimbledon finals loss to Marion Bartoli, with the German runner-up now hoping she can carry her Wimbledon success forward. The 23-year-old spent downtime last week in Berlin, recharging her physical and spiritual batteries after the best week of her tennis life.

Her training program resumes this week at her base in Florida as she prepares for the North American hardcourt season. “I have to play very well in the rest of the season in order to get to the top eight,” she told dpa. “I’ll fight for that at all costs. When you see the one-digit number, that’s just an additional incentive.”

German No. 2 Lisicki boasts fresh confidence after beating Serena Williams and former finalist Agnieszka Radwanska at Wimbledon. “Now with the self-confidence that I got out of Wimbledon I want to play again,” she said. Her summer schedule before the US Open will include Toronto from August 5 followed by Cincinnati and New Haven.

“Preparation will be important for me. Because of that, I want to take a bit of time to let my body recover a bit and then have a good preparation,” Lisicki said.

Lisicki is also hoping to return to the German No. 1 position currently held by Angelique Kerber. I’ve already been there and had that pressure. It’s difficult at the beginning, it’s something new. But since then I’ve seen that in reality the pressure is a privilege. That means too that people really believe in your strength, that you can win.”
