When it was announced this week that Jimmy Connors would be Maria Sharapova’s new coach we were thrilled. We had met with Jimmy this past December to see his views on the game today and coaching.

Jimmy knows how to win. That’s what Maria needs. She made a great choice in Jimmy. Sure some say Jimmy needs the press to sell his book. That’s a possibility that I laugh at. The book is great. Jimmy is great. He loves our sport. He just felt like an outsider. So do most. Didn’t Borg feel the same way ? The nature of the sport we all feel like outsiders. His book is called “The Outsider ”

Jimmy lives in Santa Barbara. Maria lives in San Diego. Both are in southern California but there’s a lot of traffic and highways between the two cities. The driving time is roughly 4-6 hours … Ouch. Each way.

Based on our discussions with Jimmy he is a bright charming and dedicated coach. He was the right guy to help Andy Roddick. But Andys attitude and swagger( his ego ) was too smart ass to listen to the great old champ. Jimmy learned from the great old champs. Yes, he was coached mostly by his mother the beautiful Gloria Connors as well as his Grandma . But it was Francisco Segura that helped Jimmy into the top of world tennis. Little Pancho Segura was the main man. “Segoo or Sneaky ” as Pancho was known also taught Jimmy all of life’s lessons. (now that is a scary thought )

We applaud the coach choice. We know this will give Maria the wins she wants and will fill her already big trophy case with lots more.
