The Knights of the round table! ” King Arthur ” and his court. Or were they the “Four Musketeers “? What a mighty foursome of tennis greats !!!! That’s a Davis cup team.

Great players. Great ambassadors of tennis. Great guardians of the game.

Arthur Ashe is being honored this week by The city of Richmond in Virginia on what would have been his 70 th . Birthday.( We need Richard Evans to do a piece on these guys. I can’t do any of them justice.) Arthur was a KING .

Charlie Pasarell’s. being inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame

at the casino at Newport ,Rhode Island .

Donald Dell. Again what can I say. Richards got to write it. All I can say is thank you from all of us for staying in the sport. And you still are the best commentator out there. Brett (rhymes with Saber ) be quiet there’s a genius at work in the booth with you and you sound like a ” Charlie McCarthy.” P.S? Brett you are AWESOmE as a host. (game show maybe ?) and you were great as a m.c. at hall of fame opener !

Donald why don’t you sit in the booth more ? You really are refreshing.

Gene Scott. What can I say . The first tennis guardian of the game that had really big balls. It’s nice that there’s an award in your name up there in Newport but always celebrated in your city of Gotham. Thank you for all the leadership and friendship. The game is better because of guys like you !

We were well represented on site. We saw so many old friends. Rod Laver was in a really big straw hat, it would have fit Bart Simpson head ? Misfitting clothes via the hall of fame … The Hall of Fame jacket given to Ion Tiriac was so huge he commented that he could fit his dubs partner Illie Nastase in there with him.

The friends we saw and visited with. Stan Smith and his terrific wife Marjorie Gengler Smith. Margie was in the juniors in the eastern section but went to school in San Diego California. The” Gengler Girls ” were all great players. They played at the Famous Bishop school and then for Princeton university. There was Marjorie , and Louise and Nancy , their mother was a great tennis parent and the most popular amongst the junior tour back in the day.

Bud Collins just continues to get stronger and better. Last year he had a lot of leg surgeries. But he really looks super. Made the mending better by visiting all his buddies in Indian Wells. Made it to the Historic Wimbledon and was in the press room to congratulate Andy Murray.

It was great to see Russ Adams. What a great guy. The best tennis photographer ever ! He has been such a fixture in our sport for as long as we can remember.

We were pleased to see the Newport museum looking so sharp and smart. It can never compare to Wimbledon museum but it’s not bad. We were basically at a big party. Maybe next year we might be with the most deserving guy in tennis Nick Bollettieri . Nick wasnt the worlds best coach but he is a great motivator and he made a great impact on the sport . The nomination and voting process is cruel. You get nominated and then rejected. Ouch. It’s a tough call who makes it. Voted on by the writers. Too bad so many writers don’t know tennis history…..

Standing Ovation for all of the Guardians of The Game !
