Following an MRI conducted in Buenos Aires, it was found that Juan Martin del Potro suffered a mild sprain as a result of hyper extending his left knee after slipping during his match against Slovenian Grega Zemlja at Wimbledon. The MRI showed that his ligaments and meniscus weren’t affected. He is undergoing treatment, exercising lightly and will start training next week to get ready for the hard court season. . . 

Former No. 1 Andy Roddick on how he dealt with retirement: “I think people are looking for a very dramatic answer about how tough the transition was,” Roddick said. “Maybe I just had reasonable expectations.” . . .

At Newport, Ivo Karlovic won his first match since coming back from a bout of viral meningitis during the spring.  “Doctors didn’t know if I would recover 100 percent,” he said. “Virus in my head, and it was long, it was really long when I was out of conscious. I didn’t know my name. I didn’t know which year it was. It was a lot of pain. My right arm was numb, face, headaches, whatever. If I was like that a little but longer, I could have had more consequences.”. . .

British pop singer Cliff Richard, 72, arrived in Israel to perform two concerts at Tel Aviv’s Nokia Arena but then requested to visit the Nazareth Tennis School, which houses two tennis courts that he helped fund. . . 

Aaron Fuller, an accomplished high school coach and Texas Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame inductee, has been named assistant coach for the University of  Kansas women’s tennis team..

The Virgin Active has announced it will close the Welsh National Tennis Centre due to financial problems but the Lawn Tennis Association, which gave the center a $1.5 million dollar grant in 1996, says it is working with Cardiff Council to try to keep it open.  “This is a top priority for us to keep the center open in some form for tennis activity,” Peter Drew, chief executive of governing body Tennis Wales said.  “There’s never any guarantees on that but we’re very hopeful and confident that will be the case and tennis will continue at the center.”
