Former US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro is currently held in vastly increased respect after battling with Novak Djokovic for four hours 43 minutes in the Wimbledon men’s singles semi-final that was unquestionably the best match of the tournament.

Now it transpires Del Potro managed to contest the longest ever semi-final in Wimbledon history, plus register his straight sets wins in the quarterfinal against fourth seeded David Ferrer and fourth round with Andreas Seppi, with a sprained left knee.

Upon his return to Argentina over the weekend, Del Potro immediately underwent an MRI scan in a Buenos Aires clinic. The results showed the world no.7 suffered the sprain as a result of hyperextending his left knee after slipping during his match against Slovenian Grega Zemlja.

Del Potro played with heavy strapping on his knee thereafter and accentuated the injury with a heavy fall in the first game of his match with Ferrer.  Thankfully the MRI showed that the ligaments and meniscus of the knee weren’t affected.

The 24 year old from Tandil’s Communications Manager, Jorge Viale reported the player is currently undergoing treatment, exercising lightly and will start training next week to get ready for the hard court season.

Del Potro is determined the North American hard court season will see a reprise of the form that took him to the 2009 US Open title, beating Roger Federer in the final, and clinch a place in the world’s top four that seemed his of right before wrist problems ruled him out for almost a year.
