Tweets concerning Wimbledon exploded during the just-concluded fortnight, with more than 6.6 million messages about the Championships sent over the social media platform. According to statistics analyzed for the All England club by IBM, the figure vastly exceeded the 2.5 million messages sent a year ago.

And in the heat of the moment after Andy Murray completed his history-making men’s singles victory, news of the big win was re-tweeted

77,000 times in just over an hour: Murray’s victorious

tweet: “Can’t believe what’s just happened!!!!”

Facebook also got into the act, with women’s winner Marion Bartoli attracting 18,412 “likes” on her official page while lovable finalist Sabine Lisicki of German managed an amazing 290,000. Overall, Facebook posts concerning the tournament totalled more than 20 million.

Google also recorded in excess of two million searches Murray, while half a million sought out more info on his girlfriend Kim Sears.

Murray’s Facebook “likes” were just over one-third of those attracted by losing finalist Novak Djokovic, with the world No. 1 getting 3.1 million to the 1.3 million of champion Murray.

Website monitoring service Keynote also reported that 25 per cent of visitors to the Eurosport website could not load pages during the men’s final on network pipes also clogged with news the day earlier of an England Lions rugby test win in Australia.

“In a world where the next well-performing website is only a click away, drops in service and lengthy load times should simply be a thing of the past,”  said Keynote’s Robert Castley. “From analysing site performance over Wimbledon this year, we can see how some sites have lagged behind and will have, as a result, lost some of their loyal visitors.

We are all well aware of the depth of information on the internet, but when Murray hit that last ball, all anyone really wanted to know was whether Djokovic had made the return.”
