****** TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS ******
Wimbledon
Singles – Final: (2) A Murray def. (1) N Djokovic 6-4 7-5 6-4
At last the drought it over.
Don’t let the scoreline fool you. This was a very hard-fought contest — although there were only three sets, it took three hours and nine minutes. But Andy Murray was doing an amazing job of handling Novak Djokovic’s serve — he held Djokovic to four aces, and Murray won 59% of the points on Djokovic’s second serve. On grass. Returning doesn’t get much better than that.
And so, for the first time in three-quarters of a century, Britain has a Wimbledon champion. And, yes, they’ve gone wild over there. Andy Roddick tweeted that Murray might just have earned himself a knighthood.
He certainly has changed the shape of the game. For all that we’ve been talking about the “Big Four” for years, until the last twelve months, it was always three guys with Slams plus Murray. Now, Murray not only has a Slam title, he is actually holding two of them. More than Djokovic. More than Nadal. We finally have four players with multiple Slams to their credit.
Despite the fact that Murray is the only player holding two Slams, he isn’t even close to earning the #1 ranking. Djokovic still holds about a 3000 point lead in the contest for #1. But the race to the year-end #1 is very interesting indeed:
Nadal: 7010.(43-3, 7 titles)
Djokovic: 6060.(36-6, 3 titles)
Murray: 5160.(34-5, 4 titles)
Ferrer: 4290.(41-12, 2 titles)
Federer: 2515.(27-8, 1 title)
Federer, sadly, is out of it. But given the surface mix for the rest of the year, it seems pretty clear we have a three-way contest on our hands. The U. S. Open is going to be very big indeed….
Mixed Doubles – Final: (8) Nestor/Mladenovic def. (1) Soares/Raymond 5-7 6-2 8-6
It was a strange match. The second set took only 23 minutes. But the final set made up for it all. It was quite a way to end Wimbledon!
Especially for Kristina Mladenovic, who continues her ascent in the doubles world by earning her first Slam title. She also put herself in the Mixed Top Ten:
1….Hradecka………2450
2….Huber…………2250
3….Vesnina……….2167
4….Raymond……….1867
5….Mirza…………1800
6….Peschke……….1800
7….Srebotnik……..1717
8….Mladenovic…….1700
9….Gajdosova……..1483
10….Makarova………1083
Incidentally, Lucie Hradecka takes the #1 spot for the first time; she displaces Elena Vesnina, who had been on top since Roland Garros 2012.
In an odd twist, Bruno Soares takes the #1 ranking for men’s Mixed Doubles, knocking off Leander Paes (who had held the top spot for four straight years):
1….Soares………..2517
2….Nestor………..2500
3….Cermak………..2450
4….Paes………….2333
5….Bhupathi………1683
6….Matkowski……..1567
7….Zimonjic………1533
8….BryanB………..1117
9….Tecau…………1067
10….Ebden…………1000
But note Daniel Nestor right on his tail at #2. And Nestor picks up his first Slam title in more than a year, and his first Mixed title since the 2011 Australian Open. After a very disappointing year so far, this must feel really, really good.
