Wimbledon

Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. (14) Bopanna/Roger-Vasselin 6-7(4-7) 6-4 6-3 5-7 6-3

Hint to Rohan Bopanna and Eduard Roger-Vasselin: You might want to stick together. For a low-ranked pickup team, this was an amazing performance. Too bad it had to come against the world’s best….

This is a point worth thinking about. The maximum total it is possible to earn in doubles is about 20,000 points. With this, the Bryans are up to 13,660. Win the title and they will pass the 14,000 mark. They’ve won two-thirds of the maximum possible points. That’s truly stunning. Obviously they are #1, and in practice, they’ve already clinched the year-end #1. And they’re one win away from a non-calendar Grand Slam.

Rohan Bopanna could rise as high as #5 as a result of this. But he would have been #3 had he won….

Doubles – Semifinal: (12) Dodig/Melo def. (4) Paes/Stepanek 3-6 6-4 6-1 3-6 6-3

Dodig/Melo really do seem to be a team that is stronger than the sum of its parts. Marcelo Melo is a pretty good doubles player, but this is astonishing. As for Ivan Dodig, he never amounted to much until he teamed with Melo. But here he is in a Slam final!

So far, they haven’t moved very far. Melo, #19 coming in, is up to #14. Dodig, #35 when we started, is getting close to the Top Twenty. But if they can somehow beat the Bryans, Melo will rise to #9, Dodig to around #18. Otherwise, Paes and Stepanek will have the last two Top Ten spots. We currently estimate the Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) Bryan………….13660

1..(1) Bryan………….13660

3..(3) Lopez…………..5550

4..(4) Granollers………5550

5.(10) Bopanna…………5380

6..(7) Bhupathi………..5225

7..(6) Soares………….5080

8..(9) Peya……………5000

9.(11) Paes……………4720

10.(14) Stepanek………..4445

Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Soares/Raymond def. Peers/Barty 7-6(8-6) 7-6(7-4)

Bruno Soares lost his chance to make the Top Five this week, but he still has a good shot at taking home a Slam. He’d probably take that deal….

Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Zimonjic/Srebotnik def. (11) Matkowski/Peschke 7-6(12-10) 6-7(6-8) 6-4

We’re seeing a fair number of ex-partner matches in these last few rounds, including this one between Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik. No idea if that had any psychological significance. It is interesting to note, in light of the closeness of the match, that Mixed rankings would have put these to teams right next to each other — Matkowski/Peschke #3, Zimonjic/Srebotnik #4. Of course, that also means that this was an upset under mixed rankings.

Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: (8) Nestor/Mladenovic def. (2) Tecau/Mirza 7-6(7-5) 7-6(7-5)

Horia Tecau has matured into a pretty good doubles player, but he still hasn’t shown that in mixed. And Kristina Mladenovic is turning into an excellent all-around player. Not much surprise here.

Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: Rojer/Dushevina def. (7) Bopanna/Zheng 6-3 3-6 6-3

Another non-surprise; Mixed rankings would have demoted Bopanna/Zheng to the #13 seeds.

Rankings Update: Wimbledon

It’s amazing how much the rankings can still change when there are only four guys left. At least, when there are four guys left and one of them came in ranked #22. Jerzy Janowicz has already increased his points by about a third, and he could add a lot more. He has risen from #22 to #17, and a final would make him #11; a title would take him all the way to #9.

Above that — there won’t be much to see. Novak Djokovic has clinched the #1 ranking, with Andy Murray #2, David Ferrer rising to #3, Rafael Nadal #4, and Roger Federer down all the way to #5. The first possible move is at #6: if Juan Martin del Potro makes the final, he’ll pass Tomas Berdych. If del Potro — who is, of course, badly injured — falls in the semifinal, then Berdych stays #6.

Should del Potro win the title, there is a good chance that he will make it into the Top Five this summer; he will be right behind Federer.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga falls from #7 to #8. Rounding out the Top Ten, barring a title by Janowicz, are Richard Gasquet and Stanislas Wawrinka — the same ten players we had coming in.

In fact, barring a final by Janowicz, we’ll have the same players in the Top Fifteen, too: Djokovic, Murray, Ferrer, Nadal, Federer, Berdych, del Potro, Tsonga, Gasquet, Wawrinka, Haas, Nishikori, Cilic, Tipsarevic, and Raonic. We do have two new Top Twenty players in Janowicz and John Isner, who becomes the American #1; they replace Sam Querrey and Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Hitting the Top 25 is Andreas Seppi; he replaces Jeremy Chardy. Grigor Dimitrov and Feliciano Lopez replace Fabio Fognini and Mikhail Youzhny in the Top Thirty.

In doubles, the Bryans are absolutely dominant, with more than twice the total of the next players. Marc Lopez will stay #3, followed by Marcel Granollers; Rohan Bopanna is the new #5. The last couple of Top Ten spots are still in play, however.
