Wimbledon

Singles – Second Round: Kaia Kanepi def. (7) Angelique Kerber 3-6 7-6(8-6) 6-3

This year has been a real struggle for Angelique Kerber, but still, this was lousy luck for her; Kaia Kanepi would have been seeded here except for her many injuries. Kerber, a semifinalist last year, will fall from #7 to #8 — just possibly lower. Kanepi ought to rise above #35.

Singles – Second Round: Laura Robson def. Mariana Duque-Marino 6-4 6-1

The way the British press talked about this, you’d think it was some sort of news. But Mariana Duque-Marino is a pure clay-courter; the surprise is that she made it this far! Laura Robson is now probably one win away from the Top Thirty.

Singles – Second Round: Alison Riske def. Urszula Radwanska 4-6 6-3 6-4

Maybe Alison Riske’s rule is that she can win anywhere — as long as she has already won at least one match there. She won her first-ever match at Birmingham four years ago — and has been pretty dominant there ever since but unable to win anywhere else. Now, having lucked into the second round when her opponent quit, Riske is doing big damage at Wimbledon also. She leaves Urszula Radwanska — who likes grass — probably near the bottom of the Top Forty.

Singles – Third Round: (15) Marion Bartoli def. Camila Giorgi 6-4 7-5

Marion Bartoli now looks almost certain to rise to #14, with #13 a distinct possibility.

Singles – Third Round: (19) Carla Suarez Navarro def. Eugenie Bouchard 7-5 6-2

Eugenie Bouchard loses her Top Fifty chance. Carla Suarez Navarro, even though she lost her opener last year, still hasn’t moved.

Singles – Third Round: (20) Kirsten Flipkens def. Vesna Dolonc 6-4 6-2

Still no move for Kirsten Flipkens; she remains #20.

Singles – Third Round: Flavia Pennetta def. (29) Alize Cornet 0-6 7-6(7-4) 6-2

No love for grass lost in this match! Still, Alize Cornet will probably hit the Top Thirty.

Singles – Third Round: Karin Knapp def. Michelle Larcher de Brito 7-5 6-2

Karin Knapp is now firmly in the Top Hundred. Michelle Larcher de Brito will be around that ranking also.

Doubles – First Round: McHale/Paszek def. Date-Krumm/Parra Santonja 7-6(8-6) 2-6 6-3

Doubles – Second Round: (1) Errani/Vinci def. Grandin/Uhlirova 6-2 6-3

Another step toward keeping #1 for the top pair. We currently estimate the Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) ERRANI ………….9275*

1..(1) VINCI …………. 9355*

3..(3) PETROVA ……….. 7625*

4..(5) MAKAROVA ………..6660*

5..(8) SREBOTNIK ……… 6565*

6..(6) VESNINA ……….. 6511*

7..(4) HLAVACKOVA ………6220*

8..(7) HRADECKA ………..5666*

9.(14) MLADENOVIC ………3840

10..(9) RAYMOND ……….. 3815*

Doubles – Second Round: (2) Hlavackova/Hradecka def. Cepelova/Kalashnikova 6-1 6-1

Doubles – Second Round: (5) Kops-Jones/Spears def. Klemenschits/Oprandi 6-1 6-1

Kops-Jones/Spears keep their Top Ten hopes alive, although they’ll need at least one and probably two more wins.

Doubles – Second Round: Jurak/Tanasugarn def. (10) Mladenovic/Voskoboeva 1-6 7-6(7-4) 6-4

Kristina Mladenovic is still Top Ten in safe points, but we’d guess that she won’t stay there; this loss probably means no Top Ten ranking at this time.

Doubles – Second Round: (12) Barty/Dellacqua def. Moulton-Levy/Zhang 6-3 6-2

Doubles – Second Round: (13) King/Zheng def. Pironkova/Wickmayer 6-1 6-3

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Knowles/Lisicki def. Bhupathi/Hantuchova 6-7(2-7) 6-4 6-4

Amazing. Mark Knowles came out of retirement for this, and he beat Mahesh Bhupathi, who used to be the world’s #1 Mixed player?
