Eastbourne

Singles – Second Round: (2) (WC) Li Na def. Marion Bartoli walkover (viral infection)

There seems to be no end to Marion Bartoli’s miseries this year. She loses another 130 points. It appears she will stay at #15, but even that may not last much longer at this rate.

Singles – Second Round: Ekaterina Makarova def. (3) Angelique Kerber 6-3 6-4

Ekaterina Makarova once won this title — the biggest event of her life — and here she showed again why she likes grass. Unfortunately, she made the quarterfinal last year also, so she is still only #25 in safe points, and could end up lower. Angelique Kerber, last year’s finalist, loses points, but should stay #7 because of the next result:

Singles – Second Round: Yanina Wickmayer def. (4) Petra Kvitova 3-6 6-4 7-5

Yanina Wickmayer shouldn’t even have been here. Based on both her current ranking (#51) and her nationality, she should have been in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. But clearly going for the bigger prize has been a smart strategy so far — she’s back up to #45. Petra Kvitova will stay at #8, but maybe not much longer at this rate. She had some interesting comments on that; see today’s Feature.

Singles – Second Round: (5) Caroline Wozniacki def. Laura Robson 6-4 6-4

Let’s hope that this is a token that Caroline Wozniacki is getting her grass game back rather than a token that Laura Robson got nervous. This should be a big chance for Wozniacki; she is the only seed left in the top half.

Singles – Second Round: (6) Maria Kirilenko def. Elena Baltacha 4-6 6-4 6-3

Maria Kirilenko still has an outside shot at the #9 ranking this week, and even if she doesn’t make it, she is improving her chances of staying Top Ten after Wimbledon.

Singles – Second Round: Elena Vesnina def. Heather Watson 6-1 3-6 6-2

Three British players up, three down…. Heather Watson at least managed to defend her points, so she will stay around #57. Elena Vesnina is up to #30 in safe points, although she has not quite clinched a Top Thirty ranking yet.

Singles – Second Round: Lucie Safarova def. (WC) Samantha Stosur 7-6(7-5) 6-3

Samantha Stosur will rise from #14 to #13, but this should have been a chance to make it at least to #12. Lucie Safarova defends her points and will likely stay #28.

Singles – Second Round: Jamie Hampton def. Hsieh Su-Wei 6-4 7-6(7-2)

If Elena Vesnina doesn’t make the Top Thirty, it will be because Jamie Hampton does. We currently show Hampton up to #31. Hsieh Su-Wei will be within one place of #40.

Doubles – First Round: (3) Groenefeld/Peschke def. (WC) Keothavong/Murray 6-4 6-3

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Petrova/Srebotnik def. Hsieh/Lucic-Baroni 6-2 7-5

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Niculescu/Zakopalova def. (2) Huber/Mirza 6-3 3-6 11-9

The troubles just keep coming for Liezel Huber. This is a really disappointing loss.

‘s-Hertogenbosch

Singles – Second Round: Simona Halep def. (1) Roberta Vinci 6-0 6-1

There obviously was something wrong with Roberta Vinci, but even so, it is amazing how well Simona Halep is playing. Seven straight wins, on two surfaces, leave her just a few points shy of the Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: (2) Dominika Cibulkova def. Anabel Medina Garrigues 2-6 6-4 6-3

From now on, the points count for Dominika Cibulkova, but she can’t rise above #18 at this time.

Singles – Second Round: .(4) Kirsten Flipkens def. Michaella Krajicek 7-6(8-6) 7-6(7-3)

Pretty impressive for Michaella Krajicek, considering how long she has been out — but the net effect is to put Kirsten Flipkens back in the Top Twenty.

Singles – Second Round: Lesia Tsurenko def. Stefanie Voegele 6-1 7-6(7-4)

Lesia Tsurenko is doing a fine job of taking advantage of her Lucky Loser spot. She leaves Stefanie Voegele still just below the Top Fifty.

Singles – Second Round: Garbine Muguruza def. Lauren Davis 6-2 6-0

Interesting to see a player with Garbine Muguruza’s background do so well on grass. She is climbing pretty fast at the moment.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Begu/Medina Garrigues def. Arvidsson/Larsson 4-6 6-4 10-8

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Cibulkova/Parra Santonja def. Schuurs/Van Der Meet 6-4 5-7 10-5
