Roland Garros

Singles – Final: (3) R Nadal def. (4) D Ferrer 6-3 6-2 6-3

How does one even talk about a match which was interrupted in the second set by protesters who charged the court, one of whom set off a flare and started a fire which lasted several minutes? It was, obviously, disturbing for everyone involved — but it didn’t seem to affect the actual match very much. The first set was a grind, but one in which David Ferrer couldn’t take any advantage of his chances. And that was really just about it for drama. From then on, Rafael Nadal was in charge.

As usual, at Roland Garros. It’s title #8 — the most any man has ever won at any individual Slam. He has won more than 98% of his matches here. It hardly seems worthwhile to repeat the statistics — no player has ever dominated a surface the way he has dominated clay.

He’s pretty well dominated everything so far this year. He is now 43-2, with his only two losses coming in finals. Despite not playing the Australian Open this year, we show him with 7125 points already in 2013. Novak Djokovic has a mere 5250, Andy Murray 3300, Roger Federer only 2850, and David Ferrer 4525 (some of which, however, likely will not count).

Nadal’s dominance of 2012 makes it ironic to note that his ranking will be falling. Because Nadal merely defended his points, and Ferrer added, Ferrer moves up to #4, dropping Nadal to #5. On the other hand, Nadal has only 90 more points from 2012 to defend. It looks as if he’ll be climbing. Soon.
