Two months on from the ill-fated Davis Cup tie between Pakistan and New Zealand, played on the neutral and as it turned out unsuitable grass of Myanmar (Burma) the legal battle to certify victory goes on.
A five man Pakistani delegation, including Pakistan Tennis Federation lawyer Majid Bashir, Ihtasham Qureshi, Khawaja Suhail, Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Roberts, has submitted their last line of appeal to International Tennis Federation’s Board of Directors, protesting about the Davis Cup committee’s decision to award the Asia-Oceania group two tie to New Zealand.
The meeting lasted for one hour 10 minutes and after hearing Pakistani delegation’s detailed and comprehensive arguments, the ITF board decided to give detailed verdict within the next week.
In the Pakistani’s view, the presence of Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi was crucial as the leading doubles contestant was playing the tie, very much present during the entire episode and took time out from his French Open campaign.
Pakistan had filed an appeal in the ITF against awarding of tie to New Zealand, supposedly played from April 5-7 but abandoned by the Australian based Sri Lankan referee Ashita Ajigala midway through the second rubber after a large hole developed near one of the baselines, rendering the court unsafe.
According to the Pakistanis, Ajigala awarded the tie to New Zealand without any concrete reason. Pakistan Tennis Federation president Syed Kaleem Imam said: “The PTF has taken the entire case very seriously and we are quite sure that we are on right path and the referee had cheated Pakistan and deprived us from an almost sure shot victory.
“The PTF will leave no stone unturned and take the issue to the highest level and will ensure the justice should be done and Pakistan should be given their due right. So I am quite confident the ITF board will announce a just decision and justice will be done sooner rather than later.”
