Roland Garros

Doubles – Semifinal: Llodra/Mahut def. Cuevas/Zeballos 7-6(7-4) 6-2

Michael Llodra is a very good doubles player, and he likes playing with Frenchmen, but it’s still pretty amazing to see him do this well with Nicholas Mahut. He must be thrilled — finally back in the Roland Garros final after nine years! Indeed, its his first Slam final since the 2008 Australian Open. ALthough it’s hard to believe he can win with Mahut if he couldn’t win with Fabrice Santoro…. Pablo Cuevas can’t win his second title here (he was the winner in 2008), but for a guy who hadn’t won a Slam match of any kind since the U. S. Open 2010, this is a pretty amazing comeback!

Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. (7) Peya/Soares 6-1 6-4

Earlier this year, we mused about whether Peya/Soares were the best clay team of this season. This would seem to settle that…. The Bryans, who have thirteen Slams but only one Paris title, will try to break a drought going back to 2003. They now have almost two and a half times as many points as their nearest rivals. They’re going to be #1 for a long, long time to come. At least Peya and Soares are in the Top Ten, which we show as follows:

1..(1) Bryan………….12330

1..(1) Bryan………….12330

3..(4) Lopez…………..5540

4..(5) Granollers………5540

5..(3) Lindstedt……….5260

6.(13) Soares………….4990

7..(6) Bhupathi………..4920

8..(7) Tecau…………..4890

9.(14) Peya……………4820

10.(11) Bopanna…………4715

Mixed Doubles – Final: Cermak/Hradecka def. (5) Mladenovic/Nestor 1-6 6-4 10-6

This has been a very tough year for Daniel Nestor. Was this his last chance for a Slam title? If so — what a tough way to lose! It probably shouldn’t be a huge surprise, though — Kristina Mladenovic is young, and Cermak/Hradecka are veterans and would have been seeded #4 in the Mixed rankings. They were finalists in Australian, and Hradecka a past women’s doubles champion here. It has been quite a hot streak for Hradecka, with a final at Strasbourg two weeks ago, plus this, and she’s still alive in women’s doubles, too.

She’s moving up the Mixed rankings, too. She hasn’t quite caught up with #1 Elena Vesnina, but she’s close — she could take the top spot at Wimbledon. We show the Top Ten women as follows:

1….Vesnina……….2633

2….Hradecka………2450

3….Huber…………2333

4….Raymond……….1733

5….Peschke……….1700

6….Mirza…………1633

7….Gajdosova……..1483

8….Srebotnik……..1417

9….Makarova………1083

10….Black…………1033

The situation for the men is almost identical; Cermak couldn’t catch #1 Leander Paes, but he’s up to #2:

1….Paes………….2983

2….Cermak………..2450

3….Bhupathi………1917

4….Soares………..1817

5….Nestor………..1733

6….BryanB………..1350

7….Matkowski……..1317

8….Zimonjic………1233

9….BryanM………..1167

10….Hanley………..1117

And Cermak earns his first Slam title of any kind.

Rankings Update: Roland Garros Men

As the surviving men take a breather, perhaps it’s a good time to say what they are still playing for.

It isn’t #1. Novak Djokovic has that thoroughly sewn up. #2 is off the table, too; Andy Murray clinched the spot when Roger Federer lost.

#3 is still in play. If David Ferrer wins Roland Garros, then it’s his. Otherwise, Federer keeps it.

#4 is the most wide-open spot. Any of three players could end up there: Federer, Ferrer, or Nadal. Federer will be #4 if Ferrer wins Roland Garros. Ferrer will be fourth if he loses in the final, or if he loses in the semifinal and Djokovic wins Roland Garros. Or, to put that another way, Ferrer will be #4 if Djokovic wins Roland Garros, or if Nadal wins Roland Garros beating Ferrer in the final.

#5 will be either Nadal or Ferrer. It’s Ferrer if Nadal wins Roland Garros and Ferrer loses to Tsonga. Otherwise, it’s Nadal.

Below that, there isn’t much to talk about. The rest of the Top Ten is #6 Berdych, #7 Tsonga (up from #8), #8 del Potro (down from #7), #9 Gasquet, and #10 Wawrinka. Tsonga will rise to #6 if he makes the final; that is as high as he can go.

In moves below that, Almagro is out of the Top Fifteen, replaced by Raonic. There are no new names in the Top Twenty. Tommy Robredo and Mikhail Youzhny join the Top Thirty, replacing Fabio Fognini and Florian Mayer.

In doubles, the Bryans have the #1 spots locked up for months to come. Lopez and Granollers will be #3 and #4. The rest of the Top Ten will be Lindstedt, Soares, Bhupathi, Tecau, Peya, and Bopanna. Llodra and Mahut, the other finalists, came in at #45 and #70 respectively (meaning that Mahut has already more than doubled his points and Llodra is close to doubling them); even a title will leave them below the Top Twenty!
