Roland Garros

Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) N Djokovic def. (12) T Haas 6-3 7-6(7-5) 7-5
Not much evidence of grief for Novak Djokovic this time. If anyone is in mourning, it has to be Tommy Haas, for those wasted chances in sets two and three. Still, be made his way up to #11 this week. Pretty good for a guy who was actually around when Yannick Noah won this event thirty years ago….

Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) R Nadal def. (9) S Wawrinka 6-2 6-3 6-1
There wasn’t even a hint, in this match, that Stanislas Wawrinka could threaten Rafael Nadal. He’s hardly the only one…. At least he lasted long enough to retain his #10 ranking. Indeed, he is now a stronger #10; he looks as if he could stay Top Ten for a while.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. (8) Marrero/Verdasco 6-3 6-4
And the beat goes on. Not much to say about this except that it means no Top Ten spot for David Marrero (let alone Fernando Verdasco); Marrero will be around #15.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (7) Peya/Soares def. (16) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski 1-6 6-4 3-1, retired (Fyrstenberg – back)
Wouldn’t you know: Fyrstenberg/Matkowski finally have a good event — and they end up retiring. But what a year for Peya/Soares! We show Soares up all the way to #6; he’ll be #5 if he makes the final. Peya is up to #9. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:
1..(1) Bryan………….11850
1..(1) Bryan………….11850
3..(4) Lopez…………..5540
4..(5) Granollers………5540
5..(3) Lindstedt……….5260
6.(13) Soares………….4990
7..(6) Bhupathi………..4920
8..(7) Tecau…………..4890
9.(14) Peya……………4820
10.(11) Bopanna…………4715

Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: (8) Huber/Melo def. (4) Raymond/Soares 6-4 6-4
This must be pretty frustrating for Lisa Raymond. As it turns out, she came here only to play mixed — she didn’t even get a spot in the regular doubles draw. And now she’s out to her ex-partner. (This was a truly odd match, because Melo/Soares are also ex-teammates.) It doesn’t tell us much about the Mixed rankings, though; Mixed would have seeded the two teams in almost exactly the same relationship (Raymond/Soares #3, Huber/Melo #7).

Mixed Doubles – Semifinal: (5) Mladenovic/Nestor def. Black/Qureshi 7-5 6-4
Kristina Mladenovic has been making tremendous progress in women’s doubles lately. Clearly she can do it in mixed as well. And teaming up with a veteran like Daniel Nestor is almost like picking up another coach….

Mixed Doubles – Semifinal: Hradecka/Cermak def. (8) Huber/Melo 3-6 6-2 10-3
The main reason for this may just be that Huber/Melo had to play two matches in one day, but it’s interesting to note that Hradecka/Cermak would have been the #4 seeds under Mixed rankings, above Huber/Melo.
