Roland Garros

Two-time Australian Open winner Victoria Azarenka announced herself as a serious title candidate with a defeat of 2010 Roland Garros winner Francesca Schiavone of Italy 6-3, 6-0. Third seed Azarenka barely needed an hour to get the job done.

“It’s no doubt it’s (Roland Garros) been always the most challenging for me, but I feel like I’m finally understanding what I need to do to improve,”

said he former No. 1 who has never been past the quarter-finals in Paris.

“I’m on the right way. That’s the most important for me, you know, to take step by step, better and better. I hope I’m playing better than before, because otherwise that would be a step back. I’m happy with the way my progress is going, and we’ll see what happens next.”

Maria Sharapova repeated a recent win over American Sloane Stephens 6-4, 6-3 while Russian 12th seed Maria Kirilenko reached her first Paris quarter-final as the US ranks thinned with the elimination of Bethanie Mattek-Sands 7-5, 6-4
