Roland Garros

Singles – First Round: (1) Serena Williams def. Anna Tatishvili 6-0 6-1

That’s one way for Serena Williams to banish the memories of last year…. She leaves Anna Tatishvili still below #70.

Singles – First Round: (5) Sara Errani def. Arantxa Rus 6-1 6-2

Sara Errani starts off by showing the same form as she displayed here last year. But she still has a pile of points to defend; she is a mere #7 in safe points — and a rather weak #7.

Singles – First Round: Monica Puig def. (11) Nadia Petrova 3-6 7-5 6-4

This is probably Nadia Petrova’s best time of the year, and she is really making a hash of it. She was the first seed to lose, and the loss costs her her Top Ten chance.

Singles – First Round: (14) Ana Ivanovic def. Petra Martic 6-1 3-6 6-3

This was the first match on center court, and Petra Martic certainly gave the fans a show. But she ends up still stuck below #100.

Singles – First Round: (19) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova def. Andrea Hlavackova 4-6 7-6(7-5) 6-4

There is just a chance this will suffice to keep Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Top Twenty, but she needs one more win to defend her points.

Singles – First Round: (26) Sorana Cirstea def. Kiki Bertens 5-7 7-5 6-2

This clinches Sorana Cirstea’s Top Thirty spot (she’s close to the Top 25), but will leave Kiki Bertens below #55.

Singles – First Round: Urszula Radwanska def. (30) Venus Williams 7-6(7-5) 6-7(4-7) 6-4

When we saw that we were to have a double sister act, we thought it would be interesting — but we certainly didn’t expect this outcome! When Venus won the second set, that looked like that. Obviously not…. Venus will probably fall to around #35; Urszula Radwanska still has points to defend, so she may fall too.

Singles – First Round: (32) Sabine Lisicki def. Sofia Arvidsson 6-3 6-4

This should certainly put Sabine Lisicki in the Top Thirty. Sofia Arvidsson, who scored a rare win here last year, will probably end up below #70.

Singles – First Round: Mallory Burdette def. Donna Vekic 6-3 6-4

Officially this is not an upset, but when an American playing on clay beats an opponent ranked only eight places below her, it at least qualifies as a surprise. This will probably take Mallory Burdette to around #70.

Singles – First Round: Caroline Garcia def. Yulia Beygelzimer 6-3 6-3

This was just about the lowest ranked match of the first round — #114 Garcia versus #205 Beygelzimer. But Garcia likes clay — and it will likely put her in the Top Hundred.

Singles – First Round: Dinah Pfizenmaier def. Mandy Minella 7-5 6-1

Dinah Pfizenmaier seems to save all her success for a couple of months a year, which is why she remains stuck below #100. But, in the May and June period, she is a threat. She costs Mandy Minella the chance to rise above #70.

Singles – First Round: Galina Voskoboeva def. Grace Min 4-6 6-4 7-5

A fairly credible result for Grace Min, considering that she was the lowest-ranked player in action.

Singles – First Round: Petra Cetkovska def. Olga Puchkova 6-0 6-2

Petra Cetkovska is down to #198, but that’s due to injury; she was Top Thirty before her problems. This would seem to imply that she is just about back. Olga Puchkova loses some qualifying points; she will probably fall below #80.

Singles – First Round: Shelby Rogers def. Irena Pavlovic 6-3 6-4

Shelby Rogers hasn’t done much lately to justify her early promise, but she was very lucky in her draw here.

Singles – First Round: Virginie Razzano def. Claire Feuerstein 7-6(8-6) 6-4

This probably files under “Well, someone had to win it,” since both players are wildcards — but it’s nice to see Virginie Razzano have at least some success.

Singles – First Round: Yulia Putintseva def. Ayumi Morita 6-2 6-3

This was the first true and official upset of the event, and will probably leave Ayumi Morita not much above #50.
