German Tommy Haas is hoping to heal before his French Open start after a virus and fever forced the No. 14 to withdraw before his quarter-final match at the Power Horse Cup in Dusseldorf. The 35-year-old had been all that was keeping interest in the new tournament – formerly the World Team Cup – alive with the Champions League football final between German sides Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich bearing down at Wembley at the weekend.

Haas took to the stadium at the Rochusclub to explain his plight to disappointed fans. “I waited until the last second, I was hoping for a rainstorm which might have put the match back a day,” said this month’s Munich champion. “I might have had a chance then,

Davis Cup captain Carsten Arriens, on hand at the event, said he could understand his player’s concern. “Tommy knows his body best. When he realizes that something (illness) is approaching, then it makes no sense to play and risk it.

Haas and his family were heading to Paris with the hope that he can be fit in time to begin play at the Grand Slam where he has never been past the fourth round. I’ll train and rest and hope that I get a Monday or Tuesday start, “said Haas of the tournament starting on Sunday,

“I can’t do more than that right now, “said Haas, who said he had felt the onset of his virus at mid-week in weather more like winter than spring. “My wife and daughter has been ill for a few days, so it probably passed over to me.”
