Nice

Singles – Second Round: (2) G Simon def. (Q) G Rufin 6-4 6-3

The organizers definitely did not do the locals any favors here. This match ended quite late in the evening, and there was still one more to go — and Gilles Simon still needs one more win to defend his points.

Singles – Second Round: (3) S Querrey def. (Q) S Stakhovsky 7-5 6-3

When two fastcourt players meet on clay, somebody has to win…. It’s not enough points to matter for Sam Querrey, though; he needs a final.

Singles – Second Round: R Haase def. (4) J Isner 6-4 1-6 7-5

There must be a law about multiple American men and clay. With Sam Querrey already through, John Isner was surely doomed. Which means that Isner will stay below the Top Twenty.

Singles – Second Round: (WC) G Monfils def. (6) F Fognini 6-2 7-6(7-5)

An ugly result for Fabio Fognini — he had a 5-2 lead in the second set tiebreak, and obviously blew it. Which means he won’t rise above #29. Still, he gets a Roland Garros seed and Gael Monfils doesn’t.

Singles – Second Round: A Montanes def. V Hanescu 7-5 7-6(7-2)

A fairly significant upset based on current rankings; this costs Victor Hanescu his Top Fifty chance. Maybe Albert Montanes is finally getting back on track after a very long, difficult stretch. And he’s certainly in a good draw spot: He replaced Tomas Berdych, making him the de facto #1 seed. And note that there are only two actual seeds left, Simon and Querrey. So Montanes has a chance to do real damage.

Singles – Second Round: (WC) E Roger-Vasselin def. R Berankis 2-6 6-4 6-2

Edouard Roger-Vasselin may have needed a wildcard, but he was in a part of the draw where there wasn’t much fondness for clay.

Singles – Second Round: (WC) P Mathieu def. C Berlocq 7-5 3-6 6-3

This gets interesting: Paul-Henri Mathieu next faces Albert Montanes. And Montanes is a lot more rested, but he’s lower-ranked and he isn’t French.

Singles – Second Round: P Andujar def. Y Lu 6-2 6-0

Suddenly Pablo Andujar seems to be on fire. At this rate, he’ll be back in the Top Fifty soon.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Mahut/Roger-Vasselin def. (1) Qureshi/Rojer 3-6 7-5 10-3

This place was as bad for doubles seeds as for singles seeds….

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Cabal/Farah def. (3) Butorac/Dlouhy 6-2 3-6 10-6

Note that all seeds are out.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Brunstrom/Klaasen def. Cermak/Mertinak 6-3 6-2

This one is perhaps most surprising, because Cermak/Mertinak like clay.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Elgin/Istomin def. (WC) Andujar/Ramos 6-4 6-4 .

Dusseldorf

Singles – Second Round: (Q) G Pella def. (1) J Tipsarevic 7-6(7-1) 6-1

Janko Tipsarevic really does seem battered and burned out these days. A lot of his losses could be explained by the fact that he didn’t have anything on the line — but, this time, he had points to defend from last year’s World Team Cup. It appears he will fall from #10 to #12; Stanislas Wawrinka will be returning to the Top Ten.

Singles – Second Round: (2) (WC) T Haas def. I Dodig 3-6 6-4 7-5

Tommy Haas needs a title to add points this week; this was a tough start! It will leave Ivan Dodig right around #50.

Singles – Second Round: (3) (WC) J Monaco def. (A) A Ghem 6-4 6-4

Juan Monaco isn’t going to have an easy time moving, either; he needs a final. But at least he had an easier match.

Singles – Second Round: I Sijsling def. (4) P Kohlschreiber 3-6 6-3 6-4

Philipp Kohlschreiber loses his chance to rise above #18, and Juan Monaco has a real chance to pass him.

Singles – Second Round: (6) J Nieminen def. R Bautista Agut 6-4 5-7 6-3

Jarkko Nieminen is already adding points; this may put him in the Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: (7) V Troicki def. G Zemlja 6-3 7-6(7-3)

Based on safe points, this was actually an upset; Viktor Troicki was defending a lot of points from the World Team Cup. By itself, this is not enough to keep Troicki Top Fifty; he needs more.

Singles – Second Round: T Kamke def. (LL) A Bedene 6-1 6-4

Tobias Kamke is clearly enjoying playing in Germany, and he’s in the less German half of the draw….

Singles – Second Round: J Hajek def. D Brands 6-1 6-0

Daniel Brands defeated Lukas Rosol in the first round, so we have to think there was something wrong here.

Doubles – First Round: Murray/Peers def. Kas/Marach 7-6(7-3) 4-6 10-8

Doubles – First Round: Begemann/Emmrich def. Bopanna/Raja 6-4 6-2

With Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes both at the ends of their careers, it’s perhaps promising that Rohan Bopanna is trying to develop another Indian player, but it looks as if more needs to be done….

Roland Garros

We’re starting to get withdrawals. First to bail was Andy Murray, opening a seed for Marcel Granollers — which also means that the whole Rafael Nadal/David Ferrer thing was moot; they’ll both be seeded in the Top Four. Then Juan Martin del Potro pulled out. Del Potro has been battling what is described as a viral illness. And, of course, Mardy Fish and Brian Baker will miss the event. No word on Stanislas Wawrinka yet.

****** TODAY’S FEATURE ******

This Week’s Movers — Men

Each week, Daily Tennis will look at the biggest movers of the week, looking at how they did what they did.

Biggest Upward Mover — Most Places Moved (Top 100)

Leader: Dudi Sela — Moved 22 places, from #110 to #88.

Sela won the $75K Busan Challenger.

Runner-Up: Andrey Kuznetsov — Moved 11 places, from #82 to #71

Kuznetsov qualified for Rome and made the second round.

Biggest Percentage Mover — Cut Ranking By Highest Percent (Top 100)

Leader: Benoit Paire — Moved 10 places, 28%, from #36 to #26

Paire’s Rome semifinal earned him a Paris seed and a career high.

Runner-Up: TIE:

Sela, cut ranking 20%

Rafael Nadal, moved 1 place, 20%, from #5 to #4

Biggest Loser — Most Places Lost (Top 100)

Loser: TIE

Lukasz Kubot — Dropped 11 places, from #99 to #110

Adrian Ungur — Dropped 11 places, from #96 to #107

Kubot last year made the Rome second round. Ungur qualified.

Biggest Percentage Loser — Worst Percentage Increase in Ranking (Top 100)

Loser: David Ferrer, ranking increased 1 place, 25%, from #4 to #5.

Nadal’s gain was Ferrer’s loss.

Ranking Notes

Yet again we had a Masters with not much rankings movement. Only five players gained as much as 15%: Paire (28%), Sela (20%), Nadal (20%), Philipp Kohlschreiber (18%, to #18), and Ernests Gulbis (15%, to #39). Ferrer was the only player to fall more than 20%; next was Fabio Fognini, who fell 16% (to #29), with Bernard Tomic’s 13% fall being third.

Our Personal Picks for “Best Mover of the Week”

These are subjective picks!

Nadal is tempting, simply because of his heroic two weeks to guarantee the #4 Roland Garros seed. But that became irrelevant when Andy Murray pulled out. Besides, Paire’s move is so big that we really have to go with him.

THIS WEEK ON THE ATP WORLD TOUR:

Nice (250/Clay). Defending Champion: Nicolas Almagro

Dusseldorf. Defending Champion: (No individual champion/Serbia in team competition)

NEXT WEEK ON THE ATP WORLD TOUR:

Roland Garros (Slam/Clay). Defending Champion: Rafael Nadal
