Andy Murray is due to make the call at mid-week as to whether his painful back will allow him to be fit for the French Open. The clay-court major starts on Sunday, but could well be going ahead without the world No. 2 Scot.

Murray withdrew from his opening match in the second round at Rome last week, handing over a victory to Spain’s Marcel Granollers with the sets level at one apiece.

The Scot later revealed that he had been bothered by the issue for nearly 18 months and had reached the Wimbledon final last summer against Roger Federer thanks to the help of pain-killing injections.

Murray added that he did not want to go that same route again in order to front up at Roland Garros, where his career best was a semi=final in 2011. He said in the wake of his latest injury incident that he would be “very surprised” if he finds himself actually on court in Paris.

Murray underwent a scan in London and is now pondering his next move as he consults with his team and with his own body.
