Singles – Final: (1) Serena Williams def. (3) Victoria Azarenka 6-1 6-3

Serena Williams is definitely going into Roland Garros on a high note.

There truly wasn’t much to this. Serena won 59% of the points; it really was a blowout. Victoria Azarenka was broken in six of her eight service games; she held twice and broke Serena twice and that was it. She won only 27% of second serve points.

What else can we possibly say about Serena? She is 32-2 this year, with a withdrawal. She has won five of her eight tournaments. She has now won 22 WTA matches in a row, including all 16 she has played on clay this year. We show her with 4961 points this year, to 4020 for Azarenka and 4390 for Sharapova. She was #1; she remains #1; she will surely be #1 for a long time to come. As for Azarenka, she remains stuck at #3. At least she is playing well again.

Doubles – Final: Hsieh/Peng def. (1) Errani/Vinci 4-6 6-3 10-8

Talk about a spectacular run for Hsieh/Peng: They beat #4 Huber/Martinez Sanchez, #2 Petrova/Srebotnik, and now the #1 seeds. If the WTA still awarded quality points, they would have earned 135 of them. That’s the second-highest total for any team this year (behind Petrova/Srebotnik’s 136 points earned at Sydney). It’s the first team title for Hsieh/Peng since Beijing 2009; they came here with a record of just 6-4 this year. But they won Rome in 2009 also; they seem to like this place. Or maybe they mostly like big events…. Hsieh will be hitting the Top Twenty; Peng will make the Top Thirty. Errani and Vinci will of course remain #1 — even with the loss, they are 21-5 this year. But after winning the Australian Open, Paris, and Doha back-to-back-to-back, they’ve failed to win their last three events played. Not a bad record, by any means, but not quite what we would expect of the world’s #1 team.
