Singles – Second Round: (1) J Tipsarevic def. G Zemlja 6-4 6-2

So far, so good for Janko Tipsarevic, but of course this doesn’t count for anything.

 

Singles – Second Round: (3) T Haas def. E Gulbis 6-4 6-7(3-7) 6-1

Ernests Gulbis remains below #45 for the time being. Tommy Haas — who faces his countryman Florian Mayer next — still needs one more win to defend his points, but he will stay #14 no matter what.

 

Singles – Second Round: (6) F Mayer def. M Matosevic 2-6 6-4 6-2

No points yet for Florian Mayer, but if he can win his next match, he’ll be close to the Top 25.

 

Singles – Second Round: D Brands def. (WC) G Monfils 6-3 3-6 6-0

We should probably remind ourselves that this is not an upset. Gael Monfils came in at #103 (and will stay around #100); Daniel Brands was #69. This is starting to look like a breakthrough year for Brands.

 

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Nieminen/Tursunov def. (1) Peya/Soares 6-4 6-1

Perhaps Peya/Soares ran out of gas? They have been on a hot streak. See today’s Feature, which shows that both of them are in the Top Ten in doubles points earned this year.

 

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Cabal/Farah def. (2) Melzer/Paes 6-3 6-3

The Feature was written before this result came down, but it’s consistent with Leander Paes’s extreme troubles this year.

 

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Knowle/Polasek def. Begemann/Emmrich 5-7 6-4 10-6

 

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Baghdatis/Butorac def. Dlouhy/Troicki 4-6 6-3 12-10

 

Oeiras

 

Singles – Second Round: (2) S Wawrinka def. A Ramos 1-6 6-3 6-4

Tough news for Albert Ramos, who was a semifinalist last year. He came in at #57, and can expect to end up below #60.

 

Singles – Second Round: (3) A Seppi def. A Falla 6-4 6-0

A pretty good start for Andreas Seppi, but he needs three more wins to defend his points — indeed, he needs two more to clinch his Top Twenty spot.

 

Singles – Second Round: (8) T Robredo def. (Q) R Haase 6-4 6-4

Tommy Robredo edges up to #36; if he can add another hundred points to his total, a Roland Garros seed becomes likely.

 

Singles – Second Round: (WC) G Elias def. D Istomin 3-6 6-1 6-4

This isn’t as surprising as it looks; Denis Istomin really doesn’t like clay, and Gastao Elias came in at #113, so he didn’t miss direct entry by much.

 

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Marrero/Melo def. Elgin/Istomin 7-6(7-2) 3-6 10-3

 

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Gonzalez/Lipsky def. (Alt) Donskoy/Kuznetsov 6-4 6-2

 

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Bracciali/Fognini def. (WC) Gil/Sousa 6-3 6-4

All Munich singles matches listed as “first round” matches in Thursday’s edition were in fact second round matches.
