Singles – Third Round: (2) Caroline Wozniacki (WC) def. Andrea Petkovic walkover (left leg)
This is one way to get the early match over quickly…. Andrea Petkovic did come out to explain that her leg was hurting, and she didn’t want to aggravate it. This keeps alive Caroline Wozniacki’s hopes of returning to #9, but she needs more.
At least she’s through on a day when everyone else was contending with rain.

Singles – Second Round: Timea Babos def. (4) Ana Ivanovic 7-5 3-6 6-2
Interesting, isn’t it, that Ana Ivanovic took a late wildcard here, then lost early. Which costs her the chance to rise above #17. To be fair, Timea Babos is the defending champion, so she has extra motivation.
Singles – Second Round: (5) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova def. Tereza Mrdeza 6-1 6-1
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was the first player into the second round, but it’s not enough points to make any difference.
Singles – Second Round: Monica Niculescu def. (6) Yanina Wickmayer 6-4 3-6 6-1
We may wonder about Ana Ivanovic’s result, but not much question about this one; Yanina Wickmayer (who is no longer Belgium’s #1) is really struggling. She will remain around #35. Monica Niculescu needs one more win to return to the Top Fifty.
Singles – Second Round: (7) Urszula Radwanska def. Donna Vekic 6-4 6-1
It’s going to be very hard for Urszula Radwanska to rise here; she has too many medium results. She may have one of the biggest gaps between her big event and small event results of any player on the circuit.
Singles – Second Round: (8) Ayumi Morita def. Galina Voskoboeva 6-4 7-6(7-3)
One more win and Ayumi Morita will be Top Forty.
Doubles – First Round: (4) Glushko/Thorpe def. Hermoso/Sanchez 6-3 6-1
All you really need to know about the doubles draw here can be summed up in this fact: Glushko/Thorpe have a combined doubles ranking of #226 — and they’re seeded!
Doubles – First Round: Dabrowski/Kudryavtseva def. Rottmann/Wienerova 6-0 6-3
Doubles – First Round: Daniilidou/Vandeweghe def. Cohen/Mrdeza 4-6 6-4 10-6
Player News
We now know why Heather Watson has been struggling so much.
According to the BBC, a medical exam shows that she has been suffering from glandular fever (a fatigue illness). Supposedly she is almost over it — but, of course, tennis players seem to suffer from these things for a very, very long time. Still, she should make a full recovery; the only question is how long it will take.
