Svetlana Kuznetsova Returns To The Tour After Injury

With her knee injury comeback gaining pace with a winning start at the Indian Wells Masters, two-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova is once again proud of her tennis. But the Russian has revealed that while this is a good week on a WTA tour which snakes its way around the world for 10 months per season, there are other weeks that might not be quite so pleasant.

There can be few complaints about Indian Wells, where a purpose-built stadium and grounds was put together from scratch just over a decade ago specifically designed for players and fan comfort. With billionaire owner Larry Ellison and his deep pockets now at the ready, anything goes for an event which just raised total prize money for men and women by $1.6 million this year – just because it could.

But Indian Wells, one of the Masters 1000 elite events, may be more the exception than the rule, though Russian Kuznetsova would not name names of some of her least favorite venues.

“I mean, for sure you don’t love every week, this is pretty clear, “she said after advancing into the second round. “There are smaller ones which are not well-organized, and it’s very difficult to go play them. But it’s not like I hate them, there are always some good things and some bad things.

“At some small events you’ve got to take a train, a flight, then a ride, and then the food is not great. (I don’t go and play) these events.

“But big events, I think they’re all quite good. I mean, there are some things you don’t like about it, yeah, or you like more or less, but big events are always pretty well-organized.”
