Indian Wells – Late Friday

The following matches were completed after our previous edition went out.

Singles – Second Round: (2) Maria Sharapova def. Francesca Schiavone 6-2 6-1

Francesca Schiavone loses a few points but should stay Top Fifty. Maria Sharapova still has a lot of defending to do, but she keeps alive her hopes of reaching #2.

Singles – Second Round: (3) Agnieszka Radwanska def. Maria Sanchez 6-2 6-1

Efficient for Agnieszka Radwanska, but she will stay #4 no matter what.

Singles – Second Round: (9) Marion Bartoli def. Chanelle Scheepers 6-3 6-3

Marion Bartoli preserves her Top Ten hopes, but she is about 350 points off the pace.

Singles – Second Round: Svetlana Kuznetsova def. (18) Jelena Jankovic 0-6 6-2 7-5

Not really a big surprise, based on current form, but what a cruel way for an upset to happen! The good news for Jelena Jankovic is, she wasn’t defending anything and should stay Top 25. Svetlana Kuznetsova also defends her points.

Singles – Second Round: (19) Klara Zakopalova def. Shahar Peer 6-7(2-7) 6-2 6-3

This might suffice to keep Klara Zakopalova Top 25. Certainly she’ll be close.

Singles – Second Round: Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino def. (22) Varvara Lepchenko 6-1 6-4

This means no Top 25 spot for Varvara Lepchenko; the best she can hope for is to stay at #26.

Singles – Second Round: Mallory Burdette def. (23) Tamira Paszek 7-6 6-1

Same story as the preceding; Tamira Paszek loses her Top 25 hopes and may not even keep her #27 ranking.

Doubles – First Round: (3) Petrova/Srebotnik def. Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova 6-4 4-6 10-5

Doubles – First Round: Raymond/Stosur def. (8) Mattek-Sands/Mirza 6-7(8-10) 6-3 10-6

The Raymond/Stosur reunion seems to be going well — but will Samantha Stosur play doubles regularly enough to be a proper partner for Raymond? It seems unlikely.

Doubles – First Round: Hantuchova/Medina Garrigues def. (5) Huber/Martinez Sanchez 7-6(7-2) 1-6 10-5

Daniela Hantuchova is having a good doubles year, even if her singles is way off, and Liezel Huber is really struggling….

Already covered:

Singles – Second Round: (5) Petra Kvitova def. Olga Govortsova 6-4 3-6 6-3

Given that Petra Kvitova is in a three-way contest for the #6 ranking, a slow start was the last thing she needed, but it put her in the lead in the contest — for the moment.

Singles – Second Round: (6) Sara Errani def. Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-2 3-6 6-3

Sara Errani’s situation is exactly like Petra Kvitova’s: Gunning for #6, off to a tough start — and, with this, ahead of Kvitova in the contest. Lourdes Dominguez Lino made the third round last year and will fall to around #60.

Singles – Second Round: (12) Dominika Cibulkova def. Simona Halep 7-5 7-6(7-3)

Dominika Cibulkova defends her points, but probably won’t rise above #13 this week. Simona Halep loses a few points and will fall to around #60.

Singles – Second Round: (13) Maria Kirilenko def. Christina McHale 4-6 6-4 6-1

It’s a good thing Maria Kirilenko gets a day off after this two and a half hour marathon. She drops Christina McHale — who last year made the fourth round but who is really struggling this year — below #55.

Singles – Second Round: (14) Roberta Vinci def. Ksenia Pervak 6-3 6-4

Roberta Vinci was the first seed to win on this day. This doesn’t clinch her Top Fifteen ranking, but she has the inside track.

Singles – Second Round: (25) Carla Suarez Navarro def. Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-1 6-1

Carla Suarez Navarro is still at least two wins away from the Top Twenty, but it still feels as if it could happen soon.

Singles – Second Round: Johanna Larsson def. (26) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-5 6-1

Last week, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova lost too early at Kuala Lumpur. That could perhaps be explained because she wanted to get here. But now she’s here — and she’s out again. She just couldn’t serve — nine double-faults, with only 48% of first serve points won. She lost her opener last year also, so it doesn’t cost her any points, but she will remain below the Top Twenty.

Singles – Second Round: (27) Sorana Cirstea def. Anabel Medina Garrigues 4-6 6-3 6-1

That should suffice to keep Sorana Cirstea Top Thirty; indeed, she’s close to the Top 25 in safe points.

Singles – Second Round: Lesia Tsurenko def. (31) Yaroslava Shvedova 6-1 3-6 6-1

Yaroslava Shvedova continues to be incredibly inconsistent; she remains stuck below the Top Thirty.

Doubles – First Round: (4) Vesnina/Makarova def. King/Niculescu 7-5 6-7(2-7) 10-6

Sad that this match had to take place in the first round, really. Vania King needs to stay healthy long enough to get her ranking back up….

Doubles – First Round: Date-Krumm/Dellacqua def. Dekmeijere/Govortsova 6-2 6-1
