Dubai

Singles – Quarterfinal: (6) Petra Kvitova def. (3) Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2 6-4

This seems to be the event where Petra Kvitova is finally rediscovering herself. True, she made a lot of errors, but she also hit some very good shots — and eliminated the defending champion. Neither one will move in the rankings, but if anyone has the game to replace Agnieszka Radwanska in the Top Four, it is surely Kvitova. Maybe this is a bit of a warning.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (5) Sara Errani def. Nadia Petrova 6-4 0-6 6-3

Nadia Petrova will remain at her current #12. Sara Errani won’t be climbing above #7 this week, either, but given the way Angelique Kerber is struggling, Errani might have a chance to go higher at Indian Wells.

Singles – Quarterfinal: Roberta Vinci def. (7) Samantha Stosur 6-2 6-4

Roberta Vinci’s plan for dealing with Samantha Stosur was really pretty simple: Get the serve back and then get in her face, at net if possible. Stosur has a fine doubles history, but she never did seem to get it. She will likely stay #9 this week, but that may not last much longer at the rate things are going. Vinci will hit the Top Fifteen if she wins her next match.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (8) Caroline Wozniacki def. Marion Bartoli 4-6 6-1 6-4

Caroline Wozniacki came in here at #10, Marion Bartoli at #11. This was Wozniacki’s chance to assure that things stayed that way — and she did. Indeed, with Samantha Stosur out, Wozniacki could rise to #9 with a title.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Petrova/Srebotnik def. Goerges/Kerber 6-7(7-9) 7-6(7-4) 10-5

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Llagostera Vives/Zheng def. Jurak/Marosi 6-3 6-4

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Mattek-Sands/Mirza def. Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova 6-4 6-4

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Black/Rodionova def. Raymond/Stosur 6-1 6-3

Cara Black will rise to about #85 after this. And she still has five open slots for additional events. Her current per-tournament events project out at around #50 — but she ought to end up higher once she gets the advantage of seeding.

Memphis

Singles – Quarterfinal: (7) Magdalena Rybarikova def. (1) Kirsten Flipkens 6-7(11-13) 7-5 6-3

This should have been Kirsten Flipkens’s chance to assure her Top Thirty spot. Instead, it appears she will be #31. Magdalena Rybarikova will reach the Top Fifty if she can win her next match.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) Sabine Lisicki def. (8) Kristina Mladenovic 6-3 6-3

This should keep Sabine Lisicki Top Forty.

Singles – Quarterfinal: Stefanie Voegele def. (4) Heather Watson 6-1 6-2

Heather Watson is Top Forty also, but not by much. This is a big chance blown.

Singles – Quarterfinal: Marina Erakovic def. Jamie Hampton 7-5 6-2

A pretty positive sign for Marina Erakovic, given how well Jamie Hampton has been playing.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Mladenovic/Voskoboeva def. Dolonc/Hrdinova 7-6(8-6) 6-4

Doubles – Semifinal: Arvidsson/Larsson def. (4) Dekmeijere/Moulton-Levy 4-6 6-3 11-9

This is one of Sofia Arvidsson’s favorite tournaments — certainly her favorite outside Europe. She didn’t show it in singles, but the doubles is another matter….

Bogota

Singles – Second Round: (1) Jelena Jankovic def. Mariana Duque-Marino 6-3 6-2

This win plus the loss by Kirsten Flipkens at Memphis will allow Jelena Jankovic to stay Top Thirty. And it’s a pretty good win for Jankovic, at least here, where Mariana Duque-Marino makes a big chunk of her living.

Singles – Second Round: Karin Knapp def. (3) Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-3 4-6 6-4

Lourdes Dominguez Lino falls below #55.

Singles – Second Round: Paula Ormaechea def. (4) Francesca Schiavone 2-6 6-3 7-6(7-3)

This had been halted by darkness the day before with Francesca Schiavone up a set but coming apart in the second. And she didn’t manage to come back. Which means that she will remain below the Top Fifty.

Singles – Second Round: Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino def. (5) Flavia Pennetta 6-3 4-6 6-0

It appears this will drop Flavia Pennetta below #60, but at least she’s playing again…. Astoundingly, there are no seeds left here except Jankovic.

Singles – Second Round: Alexandra Cadantu def. Tereza Mrdeza 4-6 6-3 6-4

Last year at this time, Alexandra Cadantu was making the Monterrey final, so she really needed this….

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Babos/Minella def. Ferrer Suarez/Parra Santonja 6-3 7-5

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (WC) Jankovic/Krunic def. Auroux/Irigoyen 16 6-4 11-9

Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Birnerova/Panova def. Bogdan/Cadantu 6-2 6-1
