Heart-scare victim Mardy Fish, who has not been seen on a court since the US Open, has pulled the plug on what to have been a homecoming to tennis at the Delray tournament in Florida this month. Instead, the 31-year-old will continue to stay out of the game, giving no indication of any timetable for a return.

The one-time top 10 players gave his regrets to local organizers, who had wisely decided not to use him on any pre-event advertising let the inevitable happen – which it did.

“While my health continues to improve each week, I just don’t feel it’s in my best interest to return to the tour quite yet. I’ve always enjoyed playing in Delray Beach and plan to return in 2014,” Fish, ranked 32nd, said in a statement.

Fish withdrew before a fourth-round match against Roger Federer last autumn in New York without giving a reason. The American has been more than quiet about his career, tolling local media in Florida in a text: “Still trying to figure out when I’m going to play again. Won’t be talking about it before then.”
