Paris

Singles – First Round: (5) Roberta Vinci def. Simona Halep 6-0 6-3

Still no signs of jet lag for Roberta Vinci, who leaves Simona Halep probably just above #50.

Singles – First Round: Kristina Mladenovic def. (7) Julia Goerges 7-5 5-7 7-6(7-4)

No luck for Julia Goerges, though; she will not rise above her current #19.

Singles – First Round: Stefanie Voegele def. Tsvetana Pironkova 6-4 6-2

This should have been a perfect chance for Tsvetana Pironkova: A fairly fast surface, a weak opponent, a first round. But she loses her chance for a return to the Top Forty; she will fall at least one spot.

Singles – First Round: Carla Suarez Navarro def. Monica Niculescu 6-3 7-6(7-3)

One more win would very likely put Carla Suarez Navarro in the Top Thirty.

Singles – First Round: Alize Cornet def. Sofia Arvidsson 6-3 4-6 6-0

This will leave Sofia Arvidsson still near the bottom of the Top Forty.

Doubles – First Round: (2) Hlavackova/Huber def. Kvitova/Wickmayer 7-6(8-6) 4-6 10-1

Hlavackova/Huber is probably a temporary alliance, but if Liezel Huber is looking for a new partner, she’s off to a tough start….

Doubles – First Round: (4) Peschke/Rosolska def. Paszek/Zakopalova 3-6 6-0 10-8

Peschke/Groenefeld had to pull out of the Australian Open. Guess we know which one had the problem….

Doubles – First Round: Coin/Parmentier def. Dzehalevich/Jugic-Salkic 6-3 6-0

Doubles – First Round: Dushevina/Medina Garrigues def. Minella/Moulton-Levy 6-1 4-6 10-7

Pattaya City

They were supposed to play all twelve remaining first round singles matches in Thailand on Tuesday, but that didn’t take into account the weather. The final matches on all three courts were halted. Which was probably good news for Ana Ivanovic, who was really struggling against Ayumi Morita. She is down in the third set, and will have to see if she can recover on Wednesday. Elena Vesnina may not be so happy; she was thumping Eleni Daniilidou when her match was halted.

Singles – First Round: (2) Maria Kirilenko def. Akgul Amanmuradova 6-3 7-5

A fairly efficient start for Maria Kirilenko, but it isn’t enough points to count.

Singles – First Round: (4) Sorana Cirstea def. Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-1 6-3

No points yet for Sorana Cirstea, either; her Top Thirty position remains somewhat precarious.

Singles – First Round: (5) Sabine Lisicki def. Tatjana Malek 6-2 6-3

Sabine Lisicki, on the other hand, is already adding to her point total. She is still below #50, but one more win might put her above that mark. Two would surely do it.

Singles – First Round: (8) Heather Watson def. Timea Babos 6-1 3-0, retired

Timea Babos will see her ranking plunge soon if she can’t break this slump. But Heather Watson needs only one more win to guarantee her Top Forty ranking.

Singles – First Round: Anastasia Rodionova def. Vania King 6-4 6-4

This means Vania King, who just fell out of the Top Hundred, will stay below that mark.

Singles – First Round: Anastasija Sevastova def. Misaki Doi 6-4 6-2

Anastasija Sevastova’s slow recovery should move her back above #170.

Singles – First Round: Kimiko Date-Krumm def. Chanelle Scheepers 7-5 6-1

One of these days, we’re going to figure out what fraction of her points Kimiko Date-Krumm has earned in the Pacific Rim. It’s a lot….

Singles – First Round: Luksika Kumkhum def. Casey Dellacqua 6-2 6-2

Luksika Kumkhum really looks like the future of Thai tennis. She rose from #201 to #155 on the last ranking list, and this will likely take her above #150.

Singles – First Round: Nina Bratchikova def. Shahar Peer 6-3 6-3

Nina Bratchikova just fell out of the Top Hundred, but she seems to want to get back, and Shahar Peer frankly doesn’t look as if she will be above that mark much longer.
